yocheese or yogurt cheese?

Postby Krissten » September 12th, 2006, 3:35 pm

I thought I read a post here stating the MF nutritionist said we could have yocheese / yogurt cheese as part/whole lean portion of our L+G .. I cant find that post again and does anybody know if this is true or not? Or did I dream it

I know that you can have 1 cup of low fat cheese or cottage cheese as your protein for the L&G. Not sure about Yogurt cheese.

Unfortunately, yogurt has way more carbs than cottage cheese. For instance, according to a nutritional data site on the web (which I won't bother to cite since it will be snipped), 1 cup of nonfat cottage cheese has 123 calories, 1 g. fat, 3 g. carbs, 3 g. sugar, and 25 g. protein. But 1 cup of plain nonfat yogurt has 137 calories, 0 g. fat, 19 g. carbs, 19 g. sugar, and 13 g. protein. Way more carbs. Yogurt cheese would simply concentrate that into a smaller measure. So I would be extremely surprised if it's OK on MF.

I believe that is the yogurt cheese you are refering to.

Though this may be approved, I just don't think it's such a good idea. It says in that post that it's to be used as part of your lean.....well, what part?

I think, and this is just my opinion, (as you all know by now, I have opinions, lol), that if you are new to Medifast, it's better to stick to the program as stated in the Quick Start Guide and not experiment until you are firmly on your way. After you are sure of yourself and have a few months of compliance under your belt, well then, a little experimenting can help you to continue. But early on, I believe it puts a hazy defination on what is allowed and what isn't and invites mistakes.

I agree with Jo, but I wanted to mention that yogurt cheese and regular yogurt are not equivelent in nutrition counts. When making yo-cheese you drain the whey out...from what I understand is mostly carbs....so it is much lower in carbs than yogurt itself.

I did some research, and Elizabeth is right. Turns out the whey contains most of the lactose, which constitutes most of the carbs. So, if you drain it off, it greatly reduces the carb count, but I couldn't find to what amt. For more info, if it's not snipped out, see

Thank you..

I think your right about not adding in the yocheese right now since I have just started. Ithink I will wait until I have been on the plan a bit longer.
