Yet another chili idea!

Postby DonicaB » May 5th, 2005, 4:10 pm

I have been reading all of the posts on here about how to spice up the chili. Someone (sorry can't remember who) suggested making a taco salad by putting the chili on a bed of shredded lettuce.

To spice my chili up I put in about 1/4 cup of ROTEL and then cooked it. WOW! did that add some ZING! :redhead:

I then put it on the lettuce and it was delicious. (I have to admit I also added 1 tbsp of fat-free sour cream, probably not allowed.)

Just thought I would share. Sorry if this had already been shared before.

Okay Donica.........NO MORE sour cream for you. I want to see you join that 20 pound club as soon as possible. At least you didn't mention that you put CHEESE on it.

So Ha! Ha! Dean  ~~ but, of course, I did say 1 tbsp not a tsp. Next time I will use 1 tsp.

I had to do something to cool it down a bit. Whew it was zinging my tongue! :shoot:

OMG Donna, I love this stuff. It comes in a can and it is usually by the diced tomatoes. It is a blend of diced tomatoes and peppers and spicy.....hot......stuff  (Very informative huh?) Rotel is the name on the can. I usually mix a can of this with Velveeta to make most excellent :kool: tasting nachos. Of course, I no longer eat them........but they sure are good. My husband is a nacho maniac. He is so wonderful........he has only made them once since I started MF. I love that guy.

Surely they sell ROTEL in R.I. If not, let me know and I will personally mail you some. If you like mexican food you will love ROTEL.

If you don't find it in the veggie aisle, you will find it in the Mexican foods aisle, where they have tortillas, taco sauce etc. It is very good, I use it to make salsa, that way I don't have to cut up my own tomatoes. Putting it in the chili is a great idea to give it a kick!

ROTEL

Postby Guest » May 6th, 2005, 1:20 pm

I had always thought ROTEL could only be found in the south, but I see on here where you can also buy it in Minnesota. I know all my relatives in Arkansas and Missouri use it in everything! It's impossible to find in the Midwest at all!!

Donica........thanks for the offer to send me some RO*TEL, but I found how to get it on line if I need some.

If anyone wants RO*TEL, but it is not available in your area, you can go to "Foodlocker dot com" to order some. There are a lot of varieties of RO*TEL.

RO*TEL has a website if you want to learn the history, or learn about their products etc. In the promotions link at their website, you can get a free RO*TEL recipe book. This offer is good til sometime in June it said. To visit their site, go to "RO-TEL dot com" Make sure you put the dash between RO and TEL.

Thanks for bringing this subject up Donica.........this is an interesting item that I did not know about.

It is a staple in Texas. Besides the aforementioned chile con queso (Velveeta and Rotel) it is really tasty with black eyed peas and okra over rice. We used to eat than on New Year's for luck.

This was a great idea for enhancing the Chili. Thanks for sharing it.
If you can't find Rotel, try a tablespoon of Salsa.
I never would have thought of it without the Rotel suggestion and it makes a big difference. MF Chili is now a dish I like and have re-ordered.

Ok...........I'm absolutely wiping the SPIT off my chin after speed reading through this post. It is INSANE that there are people in the world unfamiliar with ROTEL. Nearly every recipe that I make that calls for chopped tomatoes I use ROTEL for at least part of it. Put it in chili, stew, any and ALL mexican dishes....chicken spaghetti..........and that dip........when you're on maintenance..........is ONE large block of Velveeta.......ONE can of Rotel......and ONE lb of hamburger or sausage (already browned) and THAT my friends is TEXAS CON QUESO!

But.........if you have never tried ROTEL.........OMG you simply MUST give it a whirl. It is spicy so don't overdo until you figure out your own taste buds with it.
GOD BLESSED TEXAS!
