When did YOU start your work out?

Postby Out*With*The*Old » November 24th, 2007, 9:50 am

Hi, all!

I know I NEED to work out eventually - to tone and to maintain and to be healthy. I'm a little stingy with the weight loss though (lol) and don't want to give up even the smallest possible loss due to working out. I know that *sounds* stupid, but I am keeping it real (as y'all know I do!).

So here is my question for those of you out of the weight loss phase....

When did you start your work out and what did you do?

Did it hender/help your loss?

Is it really so bad if I start the work outs after I reach or get close to goal?

Thanks in advance for your tried and true results and thoughts!!!

Maybe i'm not the one who should reply first because i have not started working out "officially" yet. I got in a decent amount of exercise (for me) over my 4 day vacation. I walked about 4 miles total and logged about a total of 2 hours of Zumba. IMHO, you may be doing yourself a disservice if you dont exercise a little. I just feel that in exercisng, you will be building muscle (which helps burn fat). the scale might move a little slower at first but since you keep track of inches lost, you will probably notice a lot more there, you know those NSVs... All of this comes from someone whose scale is moving slower anyway, so i can't hurt myself by exercising. Besides, if you exercise and tone now, you may like the transformation of your body a little better. Maybe a little less loose skin, firmer belly n thighs, lifted booty, etc. Damn it, i just want my scale to move!!! So, i can understand the "not wanting to slow the weightloss" thing. But just look at it as taking another healthy step.

My mom is a certified Zumba teacher so she has a couple that she let me borrow. i don't know if they sell them or if they are primarily for teachers, i guess i never really thought about it before. There were 4 that she let me take with me...one was abs buns and thighs, the other was beginners and the other 2 were for choreography but they are live classes so you can do it along with them, kinda like a taebo live type thing.

pippi, i just checked and actually you can purchase them on www dot zumba dot com. They are offered as a set of 4 for $50. I don't have the advanced or power, she wouldn't part with those yet. So they do sell them. Have you tried zumba before?

Back to the original question ... I TRIED to start working out several times when I was losing weight (mostly with the Walk Away the Pounds videos), but I stalled every time I tried. So I didn't start a REAL workout program until close to the end. And then when my losses stopped again, I pretty much just declared myself at goal and continued with the workouts (started with tapes, moved on to Slim in 6, then progressed to jogging and walking, still with some lifting).

I never did lose those last couple of pounds, but I've shrunk some since then (probably half a jean size or so, or maybe a little more than that) and I feel (and I think look) more fit. My waist-to-hip ratio when I moved to maintenance was appalling, and far worse than it was when I was 200 pounds and just starting the program. It has since improved, thanks to exercise and a mostly healthful diet.

I continued walking (I had done so before MF on WW) after a few weeks and increased the amount over time and eventually started jogging sometimes. I also added stair climbing since I live in a condo and it is easy to get exercise that way regardless of weather. So except for the first few weeks I exercised my entire time on Medifast. I did it for my mental well being and to keep my metabolism up.

Robin, thanks for your thoughts. I have decided to get the weight off and then add work outs to my life. I'll look into working out if I stall and need to change things up.

Thanks again.
