What's an Avatar?

Postby Diet Diva » January 15th, 2005, 10:00 am

Hi folks,

I'm not wanting to appear completely obtuse here, but I'm a bit confused with this term "Avatar." I see "pics" below the names of logged in users and have read about the reference to an avatar, but I"m curious about the definition. (It's not even remotely similar to anything I've read in my dictionary.) Where does this term come from? Could you please update me with the 21st century "techie" definition and explain how I get on under my log in name?

Thanks a ton.
Yours,

Hi DD,
An Avatar on the internet is a term used for the representative image you display below your name to convey your personality to the public on forums, blogs, etc...

It's derived from the Hindu `avu'târ, which means the manifestation of a diety in human, super human, or animal form.

On this forum, once you're registered and logged in, you can click on your profile and choose from some pre-made "Avatars" or send me any pic you'd like and i'll reformat and add it for you.
