What about Buffalo?

Postby LoriHatesOkra » May 13th, 2007, 6:17 pm

According to this page it's nutrition is better than chicken... but I'm one of those people who believes anything writen on a website lol

http://www.healthybuffalo.com/nutrition.htm

My fh grilled buffalo steaks for dinner tonight and they were great. Just like a very flavorful steak. Usually I have to have something to dip my steak into but this had so much flavor I didn't need anything. Pair it up with my usual green portion and it was a delicious meal.

Now my question is this... would you eat 5 or 7 oz. of it? The steaks we got came in a 2 pack of 6 oz. steak so I really didn't have an option on the 5 or 7 but I figured right in between wasn't so bad.

Any other opinions or information on buffalo is welcome too :D

I started out answering that buffalo would be 5 oz., but then I went to the new Quick Start Guide and it's listed there in the very lean catagory. So it's 7 oz! Remember, though, that the weight is cooked weight, so chances are, you ended up with 5 oz. or less meat.

Buffalo burgers are popular around here, but I haven't tried them. Did you like it?

Yes! I sorta went into it expecting it to taste like liver. Don't ask where I got that ideal from, it's just what I decided it was going to taste like before I tried it lol. It just tasted like a very flavorful beef steak. We used whatever seasoning the butcher recommended and grilled them. I don't know how different it would taste if it was broiled.

Maybe next time I'll have to add some cheese to make up for the size of it... mmm... cheese and broccoli. They had 3 packages of steaks, 2 of them were 1-10 oz steak and the other was the 2-6 oz. steaks. The price wasn't too bad for good meat, it was $13 for the 2 steak pack.

I'd say give it a shot if you're willing. I use to be a huge beef eater and I was craving steak and this hit the spot.

7 oz cooked weight would be 7 oz. to consume......not 5 oz. -- correct? :?

Okay, thanks Jo.....I thought that was correct, but once I begin second guessing myself and saying 'this could be math oriented' then I begin sweating, hyperventilating and getting the shakes.... ;)

I've never noticed Buffalo meat in the grocery stores I frequent....I'll have to look closer.

Me too, Mike...I hate when that happens!
I've had beefalo before, but never just buffalo. When I lived in Arkansas, beefalo was pretty big around there - and it was pretty tasty. I've never looked for it here, though. Hmmm.

My DH had a friend give us some Bison burgers recently. (I think it was Bison??) Are Bison and buffalo the same thing???? They were good, but he BBQ'd 'em a little too long on the grill.

Leave it to me to reply... yes... Bison and Buffalo are one in the same. Scientific name is Bison bison.

For all of those inquiring minds who wanted to know.

I actually sell Buffalo. And it is healthier for you then regular meat. Has less fat and more protein. Be careful of cooking though. There is no fat so it can dry out very easily.
