Water Intoxication: Gettin Loaded on Water

Postby Zinkette99 » June 25th, 2006, 7:02 pm

So I was reading about water intoxication. I didn't know you could drink too much water. It says never to drink more then 96 oz a day. I drink about 120 oz. Once I drank almost 200 oz.

Anyone know anything about this?

well, i'm not an expert, but i (unfortunately) have some knowledge about this.

water intoxication actually takes some doing, but if you drink too much water regularly or rapidly, you can die. it flushes out all of your electrolytes and sodium. that doesn't mean just 96oz will suit everyone. increased mass, activity, and heat all require extra hydration. 200oz would probably be excessive. i know of a few cases where people have died. one was because the woman in question took in a couple of hundred ounces of water in less than 2 hours and it cause a heart attack. another was a cali college student being hazed.

if you think your water intake is excessive, make sure you get enough sodium. other than that, water is your friend.

Yep. There have been several deaths and near-deaths because of fraternity hazing. I think a couple of kids are about to go on trial in one case (or maybe it already started; the story was sometime last week).

Aha. I found it. A kid from SMU (Southern Methodist University) in Dallas was just found guilty last week in a hazing case where the kid nearly died.

Edited because he almost died, but didn't.

I was told that drinking half our body weight in oz of water would be ok. But what csula said...you would have to chug that 120oz in a quick time to get sick from it.

Water intoxication/death is actually somewhat common in infants whose moms fil their baby bottles with water. They're so tiny it dosen't take too much for too long.

I looked up water intoxication on Wikipedia out of my own curiosity. (Yes, I am a nerd)

Here are a few quotes:
A person with two healthy kidneys can rid themselves of about 1.5 litres of water per hour at maximum filtration... Consuming as little as 1.8 liters of water in a single sitting may prove fatal for a person adhering to a low-sodium diet, or 3 liters for a person on a normal diet.

The best way to prevent water intoxication is to drink liquids in moderation and to ensure the daily diet includes sufficient electrolytes (specifically salt).

So it looks like spacing your water intake throughout the day is all you need to do.

A psychiatrist at work told me that he has had patients commit suicide by drinking too much water. Really. I guess they just are looking for the euphoric high feeling they get from a water overdose, and end up dying. Kind of like sniffing air fresheners.

I'll just chime in for the heck of it. I do know that there have been deaths at CSU Chico in the past couple of years that were caused by water toxicity. As for how much to drink... I generally have between 80 and 100 oz a day, which includes Propel.. and other non-pure water with other elctrolytes, and also... decaf coffee.
I figure, if I need alot of water, I want to make sure I replenesh the elctrolytes at the same time. Propel has a number of Vitamins and minerals... not as many as Gatorade... which is loaded with sugar... but nonetheless.... it has worked for me. I say this, just to let you know, that we each need to find the best thing for each of us. What works for me may not work for you.

Me, on the other hand, can't feel like I drink ENOUGH water. And I'm drinking water all day long (of course I'm also hitting the restroom a couple times an hour, sometimes!). This may be a dumb question, but is there some serious diuretics in MF food...? I'm just not feeling hydrated enough. Does anyone else have the constant kind of dry-mouth, or is that just the "metallic mouth" from the ketosis? :?

Wow... never heard of this before!

I drink two or so giant 64 oz. guggers a day (see the one on my desk, below - you know, the standard issue ones avail. at any Wal-Mart)

Image

I've also read to drink as many ounces as you weigh pounds each day... by that standard, I'm WAY under par :?
Maybe the key phrase here is "in one sitting"? vs. spread out over the day...?

I'm also desperately THIRSTY since starting MF... whaddup with that? :?:
