UPDATE added Tell me it gets better.... (taste/soy protein?)

Postby Blessedmommieof3 » July 31st, 2006, 12:10 pm

I'm on day 2 and doing pretty well, I think. The smell and taste in some of the products is taking me some getting-used-to. :? I'm real finicky when it comes to smell and taste - I can't even handle Arrowhead bottled water, it has a weird taste to me that most people don't seem to notice.

I think it's the soy protein. I couldn't force down but 1/2 of the strawberry shake, the bar & oatmeal were ok; although I couldn't stand the smell of the oatmeal. I handled the soup ok and the banana pudding was really good, except the after-taste. I had to shovel it in! LOL If I waited too long in between bites, I didn't want to eat anymore.

Anyone else have the same problem? PLEASE tell me it gets better! I HAVE to do this, but I don't want to dread every meal.

It really does get better. And many people notice that their tastes change, even while on the diet. Certain products that were distasteful in the beginning become tolerable or even favorites later down the road.

There are some products that are not made with soy...the Creamy Soups as well as the Cranberry Mango and Tropical punch...and there may be others.

I think you will find it is all better after the first 3 or 4 days. It just takes that long for your body/taste buds/mind/appetite....to adjust. Most people find it is then easier to follow, they are not as hungry and they have more energy after that time.

Hang in there...try to eat all your meals...as you need those calories. Also...getting LOTS of water will help you lose.

All the best to you!

Girlfriend, your tastes will change. I can't wait to see what you have to say about ohh 5 to 7 days in. You will be amazed. Happens to everyone. You just need to detox from all that sugar.

I have the same problem. I am right now avoiding the puddings because the smell of it. The pudding is easier to get down if it is really well mixed and allowed to refridgerate for a long time. For some reason the chocolate products seem to be more smelly/soy-ee to me. I avoid them.

What the others said. It really DOES get better. There may always be some products you don't like; that's OK, just trade them away in the Swap and Shop area and don't order them the next time. You'll learn pretty quickly which products you like and which you don't. You can also change (or cover up) the taste of some of the products with things like Da Vinci sugar-free syrup or extra cinnamon in the oatmeal.

But you'll also adjust. I think when I started, I could only stand to eat a couple of things - mostly the soups. Didn't like 'em, but at least I could tolerate them. I had NO idea how I was going to manage to last more than a week or so that way. But now I eat almost all the products, with just a few that I don't care for.

Check out the Lean Cuisine area here to get some ideas on how to make the foods more appealing.

It really does get better. I think for me, because I was so ready to do this and my mind was very set--that ended up helping my taste buds follow along! Drinking things that taste good to you helps, too (crystal light, caffeine free diet pop, iced teas, whatever-)

YOU CAN DO IT! We are here for you!

It's just tastebud shock. However check out the lean cuisine section for some tips to flavor things up.

When I started, there wasn't a lot I liked, now there's not a lot I don't like!

The good doc is right, it's taste bud shock!

My tastes TOTALLY changed about 3 weeks in.

It'll get better.

Thanks everyone for giving me more hope!

My sense of smell is TOO good! I think I could handle the taste better if I didn't smell it. I can even smell the soy protein in my urine when I potty - sorry TMI!

I'm really enjoying it for the most part so far & looking forward to my tastes changing a bit more so I can look forward to the meals vs. cringe at the thought. Some are really good though...I have faith it'll get better!

If not I'm sure I'll find a few things I really like that I can survive on! LOL

I swear, I mostly lived on broccoli soup at first, with the occasional chicken noodle thrown in. Plus my one bar a day, although I only liked one flavor (and "like" might be too strong a word).

Now I actually enjoy:
chili
chocolate pudding
broccoli soup
all four oatmeals
some of the bars (although i don't eat them anymore)
soy crisps

And I don't mind:
chocolate Ready to Drink shakes
chicken noodle soup on occasion
banana pudding once in a while

I'm just starting to be OK with:
regular chocolate shakes

And tomorrow I'm trying a vanilla shake with a tropical orange Popsicle thrown in instead of ice and other flavoring (I already had a Popsicle today, so it has to wait till tomorrow).

I mostly eat the same things every day, and it doesn't bother me nearly as much as I thought it would. It's just my routine at this point.

smelly food

Postby alohacate » August 2nd, 2006, 7:16 pm

Aloha fellow Oahu gal, I went through the exact same "taste shock". I literally had to choke down everything. Now, it is getting easier. I just keep thinking this is my medicine and I have to get it down. Mixing ice with the shakes and adding iota amounts of flavor help. Hang in there!

Hey welcome to the diet. It's week two for me and I have to say that during the first 5 days I was ready to quit because the food was soooo bad to me. I couldn't even keep the chicken noodle soup down. ugh! I found that liked a few things including the bars and now that its my second week, this diet seems like second nature. I'm not even hungry and when I am its time for another hot cocoa. Also, at first I didn't like the chili but after looking in the Lean Cuisine sections as mentioned, I actually get cravings for it. It will get better. Just play around with the variety pack to see what you like and what you can make better.

Also, Water helps the soy protein smell when going to the bathroom

Or you could eat asparagus at your Lean and Green to cover it up.

Also, I meant to mention this before. Do you drink the shakes from a cup, or do you use a straw? I use a straw to keep my nose farther away from the soy smell.

The tastes do get better, although deep down you will always be able to taste that after taste. And as everyone else has said, once you detox from all the sugar and carbs you won't notice the tastes as much! ;)
