Is tooo much water bad????

Postby bokkie » February 13th, 2006, 2:35 pm

Is too much water bad? I drink about 100-120 oz of water per day and I know that it can throw off the sodium ballance in your body so I have been carefull to add salt back in. I use 20 oz of water to make chicken broth from a cube (20 calories) but the rest is just regular h2o. Am I slowing myself down by drinking sooo much water, or is it ok?

Alicia

Believe it or not I drink between 160 to 180oz a day and that does not include water I make things with. My Dr told me the best way to gauge what you should drink is to cut your weight in half and drink that many oz everyday. Hope that helps

So since i weigh 200lbs, I should be drinking 100 oz. Does that mean that when i lose weight i should be drinking less water?

Water

Hi Bokkie,
As far as I know you won't hurt anything by drinking the water and certainly won't slow down your weight loss. Bouillon will replace lost salts. I did a post on Water which tells all the benefits.
Drinking too little water is certainly a problem. That's what slows down weight loss.

I've heard/read the half your body weight thing, too, but as half your body weight plus 8 more ounces for every 25 pounds you want to lose.

And yes, I think as you lose you need less water. Surely someone 100 pounds doesn't need the same amount as someone 300 pounds. Just as they need fewer calories, I would guess they need less water.

I'm no doctor, though (although I think most doctors don't know all that much about that, either; I know how lacking a lot of 'em are in nutrition education in general).

OK, I'm gonna throw another theory out there to make it even more confusing....erm I mean interesting!!! ;)

The other theory is 8-8oz glasses per day (64oz) PLUS another 8oz glass for every twenty five pounds over weight one is. So for me it would be 12-8oz glasses of water (plus an ounce or two) arriving at 96oz per day.

I stick around 100-125oz per day. :)

Are you thoroughly confused yet????? hehe :)

Postby hollyhouse » February 13th, 2006, 8:33 pm

My gosh i only wish i could drink more water! I have a hard time drinking 16oz a day that could be part of my weight problem since ive always disliked water and it has to always be a concious effort to drink any water at all.
75 oz of water a day i can't imagine drinking that much ..wow!

even half of that is alot to me!!

I wish i could drink more any suggestions!?

I saw some flavoring at Vitamin World with 0 carbs and calories that is supposed to make water drinking more bearable...for those who don't like the taste.
It gets easier!

Holly

I use to detest water so what I do is fill water bottles and before I drink them I put them in the freezer just long enough to let ice form in it and then I take it and squeeze the bottle to break up the ice and I find it much better infact I have to drink 160-180oz a day because I retain water so badly and that is the only thing that decreases my swelling.

for those who hate water

Postby bokkie » February 13th, 2006, 11:05 pm

Dasani just came out with fruit flavored waters. They are sweetened with splenda and have 0 calories and 0 anything else and taste like juice. they are great and they cost the same as regular water. They come in strawberry, raspberry, and lemon. my favorite is the strawberrie. If i didn't know i was drinking water, i would never believe it!!!

Lisa,

That's funny. I'm just the opposite. I used to have trouble drinking all of my water until I discovered that I prefer it right out of the tap - no ice!

Holly,

I was just like you. I couldn't drink more than 16 oz. at first, but I knew how important it was and just pressed on. Now, I actually crave water and sometimes even drink more than 64 oz. Just keep on slurpin'.

My understanding, folks, is that we are not supposed to count any water that is not unaltered, pure water. Those other drinks are allowed, but are not to be counted as part of your water for the day.
