Today's paradox

Postby Laramedifast » April 16th, 2005, 7:02 pm

Well, I don't know if I should confess this or not! Today was a real paradox and I sort of dread weigh-in tomorrow. The good news is that my husband and I bicycled 50 miles today. The bad news is that I sort of fell off the wagon/deviated from the plan. I started out with MF oatmeal for breakfast, then had a Women's Pro Sports shake before taking off. At about 18 miles in, we stopped at a restaurant and I was so famished that I ordered chicken nuggets and french fries. At least I said no to the ice cream at that point. Then we went another 13 miles and I had a bar. On the way home we stopped and got groceries then to a fast food joint. After 50 miles, I was WEAK (in spirit, not physically) and although I only ordered a grilled chicken salad without cheese, I did indulge in a sugar free Dilly bar. So, I guess we'll see. I am estimating that our little cycling event burned about 2700 calories or more (we generally go about 12 mph). Anyway, I just felt like for accountability I needed to share. On top of just doing that much physically exercise, I also have to factor in that I am in the midst of my TOM!!! Wish me luck tomorrow morning for roll call! :|

Stuff happens. As long as you're committed to jumping back on the MF train you'll be fine.

I can't imagine that with that much exercise you had a negative effect on your weight loss, but ya did let go of your ketosis.
Great job on getting that much exercise in though!

For next time, think about what you could do differently. With additional exercise you're allowed to have an extra shake... why not bring the shaker jar along? And maybe a fast soup and some MF crackers that you can have in a restuarant with some hot water?

I'm only on day 13 with this... so I'm definitely not a great source of advice, but I'm terrified of getting out of ketosis. I'm a bit nervous to get on the scales tomorrow, and I haven't even done anything off plan!

Hope the scales confirm that with that much exercise those extra calories weren't a big obstacle. And don't forget, that with that extra solid food sitting in your tummy, it might add on a tiny bit of weight since you might not have digested it all by weigh-in. Also, if you increased salts with those foods then you might retain a little.

50 miles! Great job!

its ok. just get back on the wagon. i cheated once on my 1st month and felt bad (i had 2 slices of pizza at the end of the night) and felt bad but havent looked back since. and i didnt even get the fraction or even any excercise. so youre ok trust me. it shouldnt effect your weigh in as long as you drank more water than usual that day to get rid of all the sodium in those fries and nuggest and whatever else there was. and if you know that much excercise will get you eating dont do that much. 50 miles is not "moderate" excercise. ive lost 40pds in 2 months and workout 30 min a day 5x a week. and when i up my workout my loss slows down or my body says feed me i used up all the shakes you fed me today. so just for MF sake I would cut dow the excercising. youre way past the 45 min. maximum rule. im proud of you ive been reading your posts and you will make it!

Lara, I just wanted to chime in here and give you some support too - you are definitely in the realm of Hardcore Exercise with your bike rides. I think that is awesome, first of all, that you are such an athlete! But you could be right, MF as such a low-calorie diet, might not be right for you. Unless you cut way down on the exercise... I think you had a totally normal reaction at that restaurant to chow down on the chicken nuggets and the french fries, honestly! I'm estimating from your 2,700 calorie number for 50 miles total, you had already hit about 970 calories burned when you feel pray to the nugget madness ;) A 100 calorie MF shake just wouldn't refuel your body after that, and your body took over your brain. I mean, heck, after I burn 600 calories rowing or whatever (measly compared to your biking burn-a-thon), I go into SERIOUS eat mode! The recommended exercise on MF is moderate, not Bike Warrior Eat-the-Road hehehe!

:biker: (Whee!)

I'm not saying this to discourage you, but only to point out that what is happening to you is absolutely normal. You are not a slouch in the weight loss department! You need to either tweak your exercise routine way down, which I don't think you want to do... or eat more calories to fuel your body while you get down and dirty on your bike. Heavy exercise on a low-cal or very low-cal diet will cause stalls, or even gains, because the body will not only slow your metabolism down (starvation mode), but it will also pull water into muscle cells temporarily. There are some good web sites out there that can give you info too on how many calories you do need to eat if you are exercising heavily, yet keep you losing (I will come back with some if you want 'em.)

With your current diet and exercise plan, I would not be surprised if on some, maybe most days, you are in a negative calorie balance. This ain't good! This = Starving = Binge to Recover. :bib:

Good luck with whatever way you go! :pet:

Heck.......if you can ride a bike for 50 miles, then you are probably not in all that bad physical shape to begin with. I can certainly see your being hungry and needing some "real fuel" after all that peddling.

The bad thing was your food choices, not the amount of food chosen. You chose fried fatty foods......fries.......chicken nuggets (who knows what is in those things?) You could have had a bigger quantity of food with the same or even fewer calories. Something tells me you just had a craving for fries........and the bike ride was your way of rationalizing your right to have em'.

The ironic thing is that if you rode that bike that far more often, you may not even have to diet at all and could eat (within reason) pretty much what you wanted.

Forget about your unholy meal. What is done is done......can't take it back. As the others have said, just get back on the wagon, and start anew. Remember the taste of the foods you had.......the nuggets, the fries...........if you want them again without feeling guilty simply reach your goal and then treat yourself every so often to this kind of stuff.

I would have responded sooner, but I forgot what paradox meant. I looked it up and the definition was:

PARADOX: TWO PHYSICIANS STANDING IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ONE ANOTHER

I have to agree that if you are exercising that much you really need to check into calories needed for fuel and not fat. You can be doing some serious harm to the bod! Maybe check w/ your HA or Nancy to see if the MF program can be tweaked to accomodate the lifestyle and the losing!

Good luck!
