Toasted Turnip Chips

I think I was inspired to try this by something I read in here a while ago, but I made these tonight and they were delicious!

3 smallish turnips, peeled and sliced 1/4" thick (looked like 1 1/2 cups to me)
Spread out on a baking sheet and lightly spray with olive oil spray.
Sprinkle with garlic salt and fresh ground black pepper.
Bake at 425 for 10 minutes, flip over, bake another 5 minutes. (longer if you like them crisper)

These were so tasty I had to double check my quick start guide to make sure turnips were allowed. I'm thinking next time, I may add some red pepper flakes for a little more heat.

Oooh, I may need to give these a try. Maybe we can have some "chips" at the Texas bbq get-together.

We tried a little variation on this.

After peeling them, we sliced them in half, then used the used the veggie peeler to make "chips."

We have a gas oven and set it to 350 (? or 375?), and baked them for more than 12 but less than 15 minutes. There's a fine line between dark brown and burned.

Mike and I took the raw turnip slices to my Mom's on Memorial Day and just kept making them for folks. (She has an electric oven -- had to turn it back up to 400 to get done in the same amount of time.)

There were a few (and I do mean a few) left that we brought home in a Glad container. I tried them the next day and they were soggyish.

But boy they were sure good! And, in the absense of soy crisps, provided that ellusive crunch!

Hmmm, I've never actually had turnips before, but I think I'll give this a shot this weekend.

I've heard that you can also do this with zuchinni. I may give that a shot as well.

Buying turnips will confuse the you know what out of a teenage cashier. I actually ended up getting mine for free because after I told her what they were, she accidentally charged me twice. Then she voided both charges!

As for the taste... Similar to potato at first, especially when I made them like toasty chips and dipped them in a tiny bit of ketchup. But then there's this weird zing - kind of like carrots.

I dunno if I can eat turnips. Yeah, never had one either. Would love to try baked zucchini strips though!

That's why I always use the self-checkout. I used to work at a grocery store when I was in college, and I still remember all of the codes. It's much quicker for me to do it myself, than to wait for the teenage cashiers to figure out what vegetable I have, and then search for the code.

I actually went up 1/2 pound today, so I'm just above it. I expect to drop a pound or two tommorow though.

I first tried turnips on Atkins. You can make "mashed potatoes" out of 'em. Like potato with a bit of a bite. I liked 'em better than the mashed cauliflower that became popular more recently.

What?! Did'ja think I just fell off the Turnip Truck?!? :lol: I always think "fell off the turnip truck" when I hear the word turnip. Turnip. Turnip. Weird-sounding name.....who thunk up that one, I wonder? :?

I bought a turnip a few weeks ago to try the Turnip Fries recipe here at this forum. Never ever eaten one before and it sprouted LEAVES before I could build up the gumption to actually eat it. My DD's wanted to plant it in our garden, so I let them. :roll: (hee!)

I'm really a picky eater, but if y'all say they're good (I think I would like something that tastes like potato and carrot), maybe I'll go buy 'nuther one. :mrgreen:

(There's a Friends episode where John Levitz (sp?) has a problem with the word tartlette. "Tartlette? Tartlette? The word has lost all meaning." Also cracks me up...)
