Timing of shakes question

Postby Simmshe » July 22nd, 2004, 11:57 am

I have a question about the importance/necessity of having three shakes by 2:00 PM.

I'm a bit of a late riser (and late faller), and usually don't have my first shake until 9:30 or 10:00 in the morning, and I sometimes have it at 9:00. I've been having my third shake between 3:00-3:30 in the afternoon, because of the relatively late time that I have my first shake. I have tried spacing my shakes with only 2 to 2 1/2 hour intervals to make this 2:00 PM requirement, but I'm usually not hungry and feel bloated when I do this (not fun!).

So, I'm just wondering why having the shake before 2:00 PM is the rule of thumb. As long as they are spaced no more than 3-4 hours a part, this is okay??

My schedule will probably be changing in a week or two, and if so, I will be awaking earlier and will be able to have my first shake by 8:00 AM or so, so this may be a moot point. But I just wanted to know.

Thanks :).

From what I've read, the point is really to space them out evenly. If you're late to bed and late to rise, your day just starts later than other people's so your 3 or 4 pm shake might be equivalent to the 2pm shake of someone who goes to bed early. Maybe one of the HA's will chime in but I would assume the 2pm guidance is based on the times a "typical" person wakes up and goes to bed and that as long as you're having a shake every 3-4 hours, you'll be fine.

Hi Sheryl,
I had forgotten all about that until you reminded me - but since I have to get up at 7am (ugh) I'm usually right on schedule with my 3rd meal by 2pm. However, I agree with Sylvia - just space them how your body wants them - keeping in mind to try and limit yourself to the 3 hour max so your blood sugar doesn't plummet. It stand to reason if your starting your day later that your schedule will follow.

7 o'clock? I WISH! Try 5 a.m.!

It takes me an hour to get to work and to avoid traffic in the afternoon I need to leave at 4 (I'd prefer earlier). So I have to get to work at 7 a.m.

Enough of the pity party. ;)

I agree with the other responses - I think the "by 2 pm" is based on a stereotypical schedule. If what you are doing is working, then I wouldn't sweat it.

Amen Kat, 5:00 is my "up time also" 7:00? common, 1/2 the day is gone by 7:00am.

You (and the rest) are correct-a-mundo, based on the stereotypical schedule.

Well call my typical (or semi-typical!). I rise at 6:30, on the road by 7:15; in the office at 8:15 which is when I have my first shake. My schedule is every three hours thereafter.

Works for me!

Thanks for the info. guys--I figured that the spacing was the most important thing, just wanted to be sure :).

Wow, you guys wake up early--5:00 AM?!? Rising before 8:00 AM is even a challenge for me--I've been a night owl forever! Waking earlier would certainly be easier if I could drag my butt to bed before 12:30/1:00 AM (and this is on a good night--2:00 AM seems to be my body's preferred sleep time. I think this schedule is leftover from my college days!).

I don't have to be to work until 9:30, so I milk every last minute of sleep--leaving just enough time to get dressed and out of the door, having my first shake when I get to work.

YES! 7:00am ARGH. I'm a night person, I want to stay up all night and sleep through the morning hours - matter of fact I think those are some of the BEST sleep times. Which conflicts severely with having to be to work at 8, but until I find a job that lets me live like a vampire I'm stuck with it.

Kat, I used to have the awful commute, I hated it.....................now I have (dare I say it) .......... a 3 block walk!

I thought you had to have your first shake (supplement) within an hour of getting up, and then each subsequent one 3 hours thereafter.

NOT a morning person. ewww Never have been.

Shake timing

Postby SusannaRosannaDanna » August 11th, 2004, 12:19 pm

I plan to shake every 3 hours. I figure that way, if something unforseen happens and I'm "late" to eat, I'm still within the four-hour-maximum rule.
I am both an early riser AND a late-stayer-upper! LOL I've always been strange that way--I just seem to require less sleep than the rest of mankind. Since childhood, if I go to bed before midnight, I am up by 3am, prowling the house. As it usually works out, I am in bed a little after midnight or 1a.m. and up again before 6a.m. At any rate, I usually have my first shake at 7a.m. so my lie-abed hubby can have his too! LOL It works out well, it gives me time to get the kids breakfast together before they rise and invade the kitchen clamoring for sustanence! :flip:
