Tilapia help needed...

How long do you cook Tilapia on the George Forman grill and at what temp?

I have a Hamilton Beach grill that has low-med-high settings (and settings in between). I've never been a fish eater, but everyone tells me that Tilapia isn't "fishy" and has a wonderful flavor. Help me out with my first fish endeavor please :)

Joyce, I can't help you here 'cause I'm not really a :no: fish eater either. All of my friends keep telling me I need to try Tilapia, so I'll keep watching here for how the MF experts tell you to cook it! :flip: I hope you enjoy it! :D

Oh, dear, I used to cook it all the time but I didn't have a time - I just cooked it till it was done. Maybe three or four minutes? I'd start checking it after three, depending on how thick the fillets are.

Okay. I just cooked Tilapia last night. And just so you know, I HATE fish. The smell, taste, texture :puke: Anyway, the Tilapia was actually good. I cooked it on an outdoor gas grill, though. According to Bobby Flay of Food Network, Tilapia should be cooked for 5 minutes on each side. That is exactly what I did and it was really good. I buy these seasonings from a place called dan and bucks. I don't want mr. snippy to cut it out, so I will tell you this. You can go to a website called danandbucks and just add a dot com after danandbucks and order the sample package. You get all of the flavors for 28 bucks. I sent the link to Nancy and she said they looked fine to her. I used the Tequila lime on my Tilapia and I grilled cabbage with it. It was really good as well. I just put a slice of cabbage on a piece of foil that I had sprayed with the Mazola extra virgin olive oil (non stick spray similar to Pam, minus the alcohol and silicon), then I sprinkled the cabbage with salt and onion powder, added a small pat of I can't believe it's not butter, wrapped it up and put the packets on the grill. One head of cabbage made 10 packets. I was really really good. I put green chillis in my husband's and he really like it. So, now that I have NOT answered your question, maybe I have at least given you something to think about. Maybe just 7 minutes or so on the Foreman grill. Just cook it until it flakes with a fork. :mrgreen: :mrgreen:

I cook tilapia outside on the gas grill to keep the smell outside. It is a very mild fish, but I don't like any fish smell in my house - really prefer not to have any kind of meat smell in the house. I make a "pan" of aluminum foil, spray it with lemon Pam, and cook it a few minutes on each side, depending on how thick the fillets are. Sometimes I spray the fish itself with a little lemon Pam. It is very good and the aluminum foil can just be tossed to get rid of the mess. A little thinly sliced onion and/or lemon placed on the fish during cooking is also good - in moderation of course due to Medifast.

Since beginning MF, I bought a George Foreman grill. In the booklet that comes with the grill, it suggests cooking tilapia(3/4inches thick) for 5 minutes for well done, 4 min for medium, and 3 minutes for rare(oh, yuk!). Food really gets done very quickly on the Foreman, so it needs to be watched closely, especially when cooking fish. Hope this helps!

Also, if fish is really fresh, it shouldn't smell fishy, so they say. And, I guess this means that we all have to run to the docks, wait for the boats to come in, and then run home and cook it!! uh-no! :roll:

This is how I cook Tilapia:

1 Tilapia filet

Any veggies you like .... I use squash, zucchini, tomatoes, mushrooms, bell peppers.

1 pkg of Medifast Creamy Italian Dressing

Tin foil or Tin foil Packet

Place the Tilapia filet on tinfoil, slice your veggies and put them on top of the fish. Sprinkle the contents of the Creamy Italian Dressing packet on top of the fish and veggies. Roll up the foil package. Poke a few holes in the foil and place on the grill for 30 minutes or bake in the oven at 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Enjoy! :goofy:

Thanks for all of the suggestions....I tried it tonight...I was too lazy to let the filets thaw completely and ended up with watery Tilapia :( I did taste some of the flaky bits and think it will become an addition to my routine. I just gotta be patient, let it thaw, and try again with some different spices :) Very mild and not fishy! YAY!

Tilapia seems to be sort of a "delicate" fish so I am not sure how well it would hold together on the foreman...

I usually use a not stick skillet sprayed with pam I sprinkle the Talapia with lemon pepper and grill it about 5 min on each side...YUM..

Last night I had some errands to run so I actually sprinkled the Talapia with the lemon pepper put it in a glass pan with a teeeny bit of water...and mushroom halves and squash cut up..it was a delicious and easy meal and best of all, it was ready when I got back from running my errands. :)

Orange Roughy is another delicious fish albeit a little $$$ in comparison to the Talapia.

I hate to say it, Manly, but one of my favorite ways to make it was with a little sugar-free teriyaki sauce. Marinate it for about 20 minutes, then grill it in a grill pan sprayed with Pam. Yum.

Made the Tilapia on the indoor grill tonight....it was WONDERFUL! Hubby refused to eat fish, but tried it since I asked him too, and he liked it too! :)

I still haven't actually made any of this. It's just sitting in my freezer and staring at me. I guess I don't want to make something that I dislike, since it will be my only meal for the day.

I think that tommorow I will cut off a tiny piece and grill it along with my chicken, just to give it a little test.
