THIRST: I am SO thirsty!

Postby Out*With*The*Old » February 20th, 2008, 7:02 pm

HELP! I am SO thirsty I don't know what is going on!! I highly doubt that I am not getting enough to drink....

Today I have had:

2 RTD's
68 ounces of plain water
16.9 ounces of water with infusers - I had three of these

Yesterday I was thirsty all day too - I had roughly the same amount of water but probably more becuase I didn't have infusers.

I haven't had any salt or really anything out of the normal. I haven't had a diet soda in 2 days but that is the only thing different. (Yesterday I thought *perhaps* it was due to the 3 glasses of wine I had the night prior (see my journal before ya scream) but hells bells that was a full 48 hours ago so I'm cluless. This hasn't happened to me at all on MF...

Any thoughts???

You could be dehydrated. Wine has sugar in it. (which means carbs) Was it a dry wine. How much water do you usually drink. I usually always drink over a gallon a day, but today only had about 90oz and I am thirsty. You might be getting back to ketosis. I dont know this is my opinion. Calling Dr Katie......

I *think* I am still in ketosis - I had red wine which didn't have anything but natural sugar and has less than 3 carbs per serving. Plus I've lost 1.5 pounds since drinking it....

But yesterday I did wonder if it was the wine that dehydrated me BUT I'd think by now I would be hydrated again.

and I normally drink about the same amount of water that I am drinking but I have several diet dr. peppers too.

Hi Kym,

Not to scream at you or anything.... but 3 glasses of wine is actually enough to kick you out of the fat burning state. ( in fact, anything over 2 ounces is) That means your body is probably working its way back into the fat burning state right now, which means that you may be thirsty.

The water with the infusers, although they are helpful don't count as water. So, I would say up the pure water for a couple more days and the thirst should pass. Once you are burning fat, and as long as the water intake is where you have it, should be fine.

Remember though for future reference... just say no to the wine/beer/tequila/rum/vodka/bourbon/whatever else it may be.... alcohol is metabolized in the liver, which is where ketone burning happens... so when we take in alcohol, it stops fat burning (and the carbs don't hlep).

Okay, enough of that.... ya look great by the way....

How was your day?

Mike:

While I'm not going to have wine again (it was a calculated decsion) I did research it before I made the decision - I researched Wine & Ketosis and found statements such as:

Here's the problem with all alcoholic beverages, and the reason I recommend refraining from alcohol consumption on the diet. Alcohol, whenever taken in, is the first fuel to burn. While that's going on, your body will not burn fat. This does not stop the weight loss, it simply postpones it, since the alcohol does not store as glycogen, you immediately go back into ketosis/lipolysis after the alcohol is used up.

The statement was made by Dr. Atkins but other info I found on wine/carbs/ketosis basically said the same thing. So, I presumed once the wine was burned up I would be back in ketosis. Maybe I am out of it but all other signs say otherwise (I'm not hungry, I'm losing, I have energy, etc). I just simply don't recall being this thirsty EVER :) Maybe my body is missing my cherished DDP's :)

(Oh - I knew the infusers didn't count as water but thought that they were 'better' and more pure than a DDP)

Could be the DPP... but I doubt it. I still tend to think it was the wine
;)

In all of our training (as Health Coaches), we are told that alcohol is to be avoided (and extra carbs will kick you out) on this program. Its such a light state of ketosis that even a crouton could kick some out.

Anyhow, just want to encourage you. Hopefully by tomorrow the thirst is gone, if not, keep drinking. If this continues, make sure that you talk to a health professional about it. You should not be so thirsty.

:roflmao: Yeah, I kind of doubt its the DDP too :) LOL The scale keeps dropping though so if thirst = faster loss then hey, I'm game!

Thanks, Mike :)

Thirst can be a sign of other problems, though. If it persists, I'd have it checked out.

Congrats on the scale movement!

Believe it or not, you can overdose on water! I have done this before and even posted about it. One day I had 10 glasses of water by 11:00 and just wanted more water. A doctor at work told me about water intoxication- apparently it is a great euphoric feeling and makes you just want more! I was wired beyond belief and just wanted more and more water! I had to just stop drinking for a few hours!

Thanks all! I'm going to play it by ear for a few more days. If it persists into next week then I'll give my PCP a jingle. At least getting my water in isn't hard - lol.

I just did a search on WebMD for "thirst" and this is what popped up. Don't ask me why. I'm avoiding a tough tax return right now ..............

Before being diagnosed, many people with type 2 diabetes develop symptoms such as increased thirst and urination, weight loss, and...2 diabetes develop symptoms such as increased thirst and urination,

Yeah, Bren, I thought of that too. But I think I've actually had less of it since giving up my DDP's this week. I never counted those - I had them at will and KNOW I had more than 3 a day - - way more, lol.

But, good news, I don't seem so thirsty today and I'm still having the same amount of fluids I normally do. So, perhaps it was the wine after all - tee hee. Or as Mike said, maybe I was out of ketosis and the thirst was the only sign I had - - who knows. I feel much better so far today though so I am keepin' my fingers crossed.

The good news is the scale fairy has been oh so kind to me this week. I'm close to the 60# club and hells bells, I just entered the 50# club.

Thanks so much, everyone. The support/thoughts are appreciated.

JO: I thought about Type 2 also and put it out of my head. Wouldnt it suck to get that in the midst of losing weight and getting healthy? :)
