Is there a guide on what we should be looking for in meat?

Postby Guest » March 9th, 2006, 11:35 am

I know that you can have 7 oz. of poultry or 5 oz. of lean beef, but what should I be looking for in the products?

For instance, I love turkey. It's extremely rare to find turkey cutlets in my local grocery story, and I don't want to cook an entire bird! What should I be looking for that would be acceptable (and not overly processed).

Also, what about chicken. Is it ok to buy the large bags of frozen tenderloins? I happen to have a bag here, so here is the info.

Serving Size - 2 pieces (125g)
Calories - 110
Calories From Fat - 10
Total Fat - 1.5g
Saturated Fat - 0g
Cholesterol - 60mg
Sodium - 310mg
Carbs - 0 in all areas
Protein - 24g

Here is what the bag says..."Chicken Tenderloins, Enhanced with up to 15% seasoned chicken broth, protected with chicken broth glaze".

These bags are much cheaper and easier for me to buy, so they are ok.

Any help on either of these would be awesome!

Lean Meat

Postby Jan » March 10th, 2006, 9:51 pm

Hi there,
As far as turkey goes I would look for turkey breasts. There are also some frozen turkey roasts that would be fine. Just bake them and then slice off your 7oz of meat. The chicken should be fine. I generally just purchase frozen or fresh boneless skinless breasts. The thigh meat is pretty high in fat. Any kind of fish or sea food is fine. Just don't bread it or deep fry it. In general any meat that has loin in the title is pretty lean. Loin pork chops are fine -- just cut off any fat. Sirloin is another example. You can always ask at the meat market for what is the leanest.
Hope this helps.

Found this information on <snip>no urls please - Mr. Snippy</snip>

3 oz Chicken, cooked, edible,
-- skinless

Breast (baked):
===============

Per serving:
: 116.0 calories
: 24.0 g protein
: 0.0 g carbohydrate
: 2.0 g total fat
: 0.0 g saturated fat
: 72.0 mg cholesterol
: 63.0 mg sodium

The difference in the sodium catches my eye. What are the ingredients? I know the flash-frozen bags are easier, but the bulk boneless, skinless breasts repackaged into smaller bags (which we do at home ourselves) works well for hubby and me.
Here's to our mutual success! :buddies: --Diana
