Is the scale two days behind?

Postby jayzoe » March 14th, 2008, 11:20 am

I heard this on another weight loss board I look at occasionally... someone was complaining about how their weight fluctuated and the responder said that your scale is typically 48 hours behind your eating habits. So if you binge on Wednesday, it will show on the scale on Friday instead of Thursday...

so what's your experience on this? since I read it, I noticed it a little but I'm not sure if there's any scientific basis to it at all... I just found it interesting!

Sometimes it shows right away because the mass of the food is in your bowels, sometimes it shows later -- it's a complex issue, really. But the timing sounds about right for the fat to actually get into storage. There's lots of balancing of variables in the equations. The same goes for exercise, too. When you exercise, the muscles build mass and retain water, so you might actually WEIGH more even though you're losing inches of fat, and it may take a day or two to equalize.

It's kind of like accounting -- the Grand Total at the end of the time period is the main thing. The Line Items help you analize how you got there.

No doubt, the dh, aka Science Guy, will chime in here with some actual scientific detail (I've got a "soft" science degree, not a hard science like Mr. Brainiac).

Of course there is something scientific about it. Not sure exactly what it is, but Dr. Andersen could tell ya. I do know that the day after you are just dealing with the mass of the food. Its the next day when you have increased the water due to extra sodium and you have actually added lbs of fat to your body from the excess calories. So, yeah, 2 days later sounds about right.

Hmm, guess I did know the scientific basis afterall. Sometimes I amaze even myself.

Well, that was an amazing issue I had not heard of! So would it be true then that if you have a good day, that it will show 2 days later also? or just on the gain?

For me, it's usually the opposite. Excess sodium causes an IMMEDIATE gain, and the bloat will be reflected on the scale the next morning, whereas REAL weight gain won't show for a couple of days.

Thanks for addressing this it is timely as I have stayed compliant and exercised only to weigh myself this morning and I am up from the other day...just a little...but since I was feeling especially "skinny" I was expecting a lower number so I will stay on course and I think by Tues. I will have a significant drop, 3 lbs.
