Do the Hot drinks stain teeth?

Postby Lauraly » June 19th, 2006, 10:07 am

Hi all,

On Friday I went to the dentist and got my first set of Ortho-Clear trays. They are like Invisa-line; clear braces type things that I got to correct a gap in my front teeth. I have to wear them for 6 months and I can already tell this will be a big help with Medifast. I have to take them out to eat solid food, and it is a pain in the patootie to get them in and out. Cheats? Sooo not worth it.

Anyway! The literature they gave me says not to drink hot drinks like coffee or tea while they are in, because they will stain the trays. I really like my hot chocolate and chai lattes, but if they stain the trays, it is not worth taking the trays out to have them. Anyone have an answer on this?

I'm going to second that. I would expect them to stain your teeth.

Hi,

I actually have invisalign and anytime you have this sort of treatment it is more important that you dont have hot drinks because they can also change the shape of the retainer. remember they are made of plastic and that is there main concern more than staining the aligners, which happens as well. Take care and happy losing!

I have read that some people use those two drinks but prepare them cold...like shakes. Don't know if that would make any difference or if you'd like them that way...

Just a thought.

Straws might be an option -- helps direct the liquid away from the trays/your teeth.

Or maybe drink them with a straw?? I really don't know. I haven't even noticed any stainin on my teeth. I drink the hot chocolate and the cap., but not the Chai. Also, could you have the hot drinks first thing in the mornin when you wake---you would take them off to clean your teeth anyway, and then again before bed---again, you would be cleanin your teeth anyway, I would assume. Just a thought. Good luck!!

Thanks for the replies. I am still getting used to these Ortho Clear trays after 2 weeks. I have been drinking hot drinks occasionally (bad me!), but I do drink them with a straw.

I didn't even consider that hot drinks might warp the plastic. That wasn't in the info book the dentist gave me. Wouldn't anything hot enough to soften plastic burn my mouth? When I do have the hot chocolate or the Chai, I have it warm, but not steaming.

Having these trays makes me want to just have shakes and other drinks. Having the oatmeal, soups and bars means I have to:
1. Pop the trays out (can be painful)
2. Eat the food, chewing very carefully because the teeth are tender
3. Brush teeth well
4. Floss well
5. Brush trays well
6. Pop trays back in (more pain)

Ugh. I'm only having solid food about twice a day because I hate going through that procedure. The things we do for beauty!

I know just how you feel. i have to change mine every 2 weeks and the first 3 days i just want to have RTS shakes w/the straw and nothing else. anything that allows me the option to keep my aligners on. yes your teeth are more sensitive and it hurts to take them off. but yes the aligner company actually doesnt want you to drink hot drinks in fear it might change the aligners. what you think is hot enough to burn your mouth is really hot and you dont need that much heat to effect plastic. i drink cold drinks with my aligners as im allowed to but NOT soda as it can actually damage your teeth due to the retainers being on with the acid of the soda in them resting there until you brush again. ive had mine for some time now. all the best!

I'm just so happy you're doing it! I'm glad you've started! It'll take some modification and some other annoyances, but it'll be so worth it! YAY! You're going to look SO GREAT!
