I, too, was a 3-pack-a-day smoker until I put them down on october 18, 2003. I had always said I would quit when I turned 40, which i did on november of 2003. I agree with you DeDe that quitting was MUCH easier than I had anticipated. I know the trick for me is to NEVEr, EVEr puff a cigarette again, not even one drag, or i will be buying a pack the next day. I did gain 30 lbs when i quit, kept it on until January of 2006 when i started a medifast-type diet. I have read these boards daily since January of 2006, but rarely have the time to post. I was able to lose the extra weight in just under 5 months (slow loser), and have successfully kept it off since June of '06. I am like Lauren and Rrobin in that I account for every morsel that goes into my mouth, and I exercise religiously. I do eat dessert on occasion, but have yet to have anything fried, or any fast food. I may go the rest of my life avoiding those two things, and that's fine by me. After a while, you quit missing them, like the cigarettes!
Anyway, to Biki, Mike and all the others who are contemplating quitting smoking, just use the same philosophy you have with medifast and I have no doubt you will all be successful!

Hi

Postby dede4wd » January 7th, 2008, 7:45 pm

Here's a post from my little tool I use to motivate myself...

I have been quit for 4 Months, 5 Days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 33 seconds (127 days). I have saved $1,275.30 by not smoking 5,101 cigarettes. I have saved 2 Weeks, 3 Days, 17 hours and 5 minutes of my life. My Quit Date: 9/2/2007 6:59 AM

I really like that end part...estimating how much LIFE I have gotten back. I also KNOW that if I have one puff, I will want a whole cigarette, one cigarette, I want to buy a pack...this isn't "I'll just have a donught hole and walk a mile", this is absolutely staying away from them.

It's not hard anymore, they're even starting to smell bad!

I say anything you can do to cut down before you quit...RIGHT ON!

Dede, you did an amazing thing. I know it was quite a struggle for you. Just wanted to let you know I'm proud of you and anyone who can kick that habit.

I never had a habit, but I did smoke socially and on vacations for years. Last fall I made a deal with my hubby that if he would stop smoking cigars, I would stop smoking for good. I knew everything was good when I went on vacation in December and didn't even think of having a cig.

Unca, what can we do to help you?

Hi

Postby dede4wd » January 22nd, 2008, 12:23 am

Thanks Jo.

All I can say is it was time...everything lined up and I just decided to do it. It cost me weight because I KNEW I wasn't strong enough to MF AND quit smoking, so I picked one, knowing MF would be there once I got the ciggie monster off my back...

All I can say is it was easier than I thought it was going to be when I'd just DECIDED. I wasn't doing it because I should, I wasn't doing it because my Grandma wanted me to, it was just that time.

Way to go with you too! I tried to make the same deal with my Dad about the cigars...he's cut down!

Dede, I am so delighted for you! :rose: After I quit smoking (a 35 year-old habit) I gained weight too--but it came off and your's will too. Even my doctor said that the extra weight was not as detrimental to my health as the effects of smoking!

Tim ... I agree with Dede--when the the time is right, you will know. I started smoking at the age of 15 (and I'm older than you are) so I know you can do it too!! 8)

My health decided for me. I had gotten to where I could not breath without wheezing. I knew the weight and the cigarettes have got to go!
