Starting - few questions - calorie intake safe

Postby dkearby » September 29th, 2006, 2:39 pm

Hi,

I am starting medifast this weekend and have a few questions.

First, is it safe and healthy to eat only 800-1000 calories a day? Everything I have ever heard states other wise.

Secondly, do you find that you have less energy due to the drastic decrease in calories?

Thirdly, with so little calories, do you find yourself feeling hungry all the time?

I am just curious as what to expect.

First of all, welcome. To answer your questions ...

Yes, it's safe and healthy, if YOU are healthy. If you have medical issues, you should consult your doctor before starting.

No, you won't have less energy. The reduced level of carbohydrates puts you into a very mild state of ketosis, which gives you a feeling of increased energy. (That said, if you have a physically demanding job or work out a lot, you will not be getting enough calories to sustain that level of activity and will have to modify some things. But for normal activities, you'll be fine.)

No, normally you're not hungry once you've been on the plan for a few days (once you get into ketosis). Another effect of ketosis is appetite suppression. The soy protein also decreases appetite.

Hi David and welcome to the forum,

Eating our typical western fast food diet of 800-1000 calories could be unsafe, but medifast is properly balanced and fortified to give you everything you need.

Just wanted to add that to what Robin told you. I think she answered your other questions for you.

Hope to see you around...:)
