Splenda Has Carbs???

Postby Arklahoma » August 13th, 2006, 5:05 pm

I was doing some internet reading, last night, and came across a low carb forum that was pretty good. They are stating that each packet of splenda has 0.9 grams of carbs. This was totally shocking to me, as MF allows up to 10 packets per day. I'm trying to corroborate this data and am curious if any of you know if this is true.

Got this off their website:

What is SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener?

SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener contains sucralose (SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener), the no calorie sweetener made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar, with no unpleasant aftertaste. SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener can be used virtually anywhere sugar is used. It can also be used in cooking and baking in a variety of recipes. Like many no and low calorie sweeteners, each serving of SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener contains a very small amount of common food ingredients, e.g., dextrose and/or maltodextrin, for volume. Because the amount of these ingredients is so small, SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener still has an insignificant calorie value per serving and meets FDA's standards for "no calorie" sweeteners.

SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener comes in two forms for consumers, granular and packet. The granular form of SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener measures and pours just like sugar. SPLENDA® Packets provide a convenient way to add sweetness without guilt!

How is SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener made?

SPLENDA® is the brand name for the ingredient sucralose. It is made through a patented, multi-step process that starts with sugar and converts it to a no calorie, non-carbohydrate sweetener. The process selectively replaces three hydrogen-oxygen groups on the sugar molecule with three chlorine atoms. Chlorine is present naturally in many of the foods and beverages that we eat and drink every day ranging from lettuce, mushrooms and table salt. In the case of sucralose, its addition converts sucrose to sucralose, which is essentially inert. The result is an exceptionally stable sweetener that tastes like sugar, but without sugar's calories. After consumption, sucralose passes through the body without being broken down for energy, so it has no calories, and the body does not recognize it as a carbohydrate.

So, its like dietary fiber... doesn't digest.

I read that information, but this is the part I'm concerned about. (bolding added by me for emphasis). I know that products can be labeled "fat free" as long as they contain < 0.5 grams per serving. I just don't know what the rule is for carbs.

I believe it's similar for carbs. That's why I'm always warning the Walden Farms users. It's 0 everything per serving, but that doesn't mean you can eat a whole bottle of the stuff.

I've heard it can be anywhere up to 0.9 and be considered 0 carbs, but I don't know that for sure.

I'm gonna keep researching but I'm beginning to believe that it's probably true.

I have also heard that if you can find the liquid version of splenda (supposedly very difficult to find in the US but used liberally in canada) that it is truly calorie free. Anyone else heard this???

I'm going to just e-mail the FDA from my work address to try to get a definitive answer.

I'll let you know when I get a response. I figure if I use the paper's e-mail address, they'll respond faster.

They have an office in Dallas, so I e-mailed the rep there.

Oooh, I got the liquid version ages ago, when I was on Atkins. I forgot what it's called or where I got it. Online somewhere. It's probably still in my cabinet. (I'm also the one who got Splenda before it was approved in this country. Had my cousin in Canada send me some boxes.)

From about dot com:

One of the most sought-after products in the low-carb world is so-called “liquid Splenda”. Why? Because sucralose, the artificial sweetener in Splenda is so incredibly concentrated that it needs a “carrier” to dilute it in order to be useful – and the carrier in powdered Splenda is made up of dextrose and maltodextrin, fancy words for “sugar” and “sugar”. A packet of Splenda has slightly less than one gram of carbohydrate. In liquid form, the carrier is water, with zero carbs.

And they listed the kind I had. It's called Sweetzfree. Available from, I believe, sweetzfree dot com.

It's all coming back to me now. It's the stuff mixed WITH the powdered Splenda, the filler, that has the slight amount of carbs. Which is why the liquid doesn't have it. I got a tiny dropper bottle of it to test, but I haven't used it much. I didn't use Splenda much back then, and I forgot about it till now.

I'm going to put it in my oatmeal tomorrow morning if I can find it!!
