SOUTH BEACH MEAL?????

Postby HOPE » March 7th, 2006, 1:22 pm

I was shopping last night and for some reason(like I have nothing better to do.. hahaha) I took a look at the frozen meals hoping for something that looked "workable" for a busy night schedule. South beach has one PECAN PORK w/ Green beans.. 15 carbs and 270 calories.. IS this a NO-NO??? I am guessing the answer is going to be a BIG YES!! hahah But ya cant blame a girl for trying!!!!!! :D

If I had to venture a guess, we'll probably be told it's not got enough meat or veggies and too many carbs....but that's just my guess :)

South Beach Meal

Postby Jan » March 7th, 2006, 8:47 pm

Hi Hope,
You already know the answer -- it's not a great idea to use these frozen dinners. I checked MF chicken breast and beef patties ( not available anymore  ) to compare. The sodium content is 350mg in the chicken, 280 in the beef-- the SB meal has 990 -- that's an awful lot. Fat is 2.5 grams in the MF chicken 3 grams in the beef as compared with 13 grams in the SB product.-- again not sooo great. Zero sugars, zero carbs in the chicken, 2 carbs 1 sugar in the beef. as compared with 5 sugars and 12 carbs. By now I'm sure you are seeing the problem.
For a quick meal I always have a cooked chicken breast or two in the freezer to just zap and use. Green beans of course are no problem -- just open a can!!

Beep beep! Back away!

I wouldn't go for it - way way too much fat, too many carbs...and the sodium is sky high...

Tyson and Foster Farms both have frozen grilled chicken breast strips that are ok in a pinch but like you, Jan we have chicken breasts, halibut, ahi, tilapia and salmon in the freezer. I have a regular & a convection oven so I usually convect 'em for 15 minutes and then finish it off under the broiler or George 'em - it makes a great meal in minutes. Fresh or frozen shrimp cooks lightening fast on the stovetop, in George or under the broiler!

I broiled some fresh lean chork pops the other night in about 12 minutes - Unca loved his! Terry was drooling for more - it took less time than a frozen dinner to prepare and was healthy and yummuh!

Ok--being as I am the wishy washy member of the group... I can say...DON'T do it!!. I had a couple of the south beach meals. They look really good when they are cooked. They smell really good as you inhale....however the meat has this really funny texture as you are chewing...and folks it just ain't normal. Everything else just taste frozen with a powerful sauce!!

Nancy you aren't bursting our bubbles.... Lord knows we have been bubbles long enough!!...I just like to view you as the EXPERT...who is trying to save me from myself!!!!!!

If I'm going to cheat, it's going to be with something better than cardboard meat!
