Sodium

Postby sheri1103 » October 18th, 2007, 10:39 am

Hi All, Just wondering if anyone has any comments on the amount of sodium we are to have each day. I take a little white pill for high blood pressure - which I already know will continue when I am done losing weight. High BP is all through the family. Anyway I just make it point to watch sodium intake. Any ideas on what the norm is for this? I was just curious as I notice the shakes have quite a bit - but they are offset with potassium. Does this make a difference? I am looking at all of my past eating habits and trying to set healthy ones for when the weight loss is complete. Thanks everyone!

With the amount of water we drink, alot of the minerals and water soluble vitamins get washed out. The main thing is to try and watch that your lean and green aren't loaded with sodium and you should be just fine.

The recommended maximum for healthy people is around 2400 milligrams a day, I believe, although most people exceed that. But you should check with your doctor to make sure it's OK. It's a good idea to clear it with your doctor when starting ANY program, particularly if you have health problems or are on prescription medication.

thanks for the helpful info. I guess the reason I asked is that lately I have not been able to find good fresh "green stuff" that I like and looking at the labels on, say canned green beans, for example I went yikes!
Also with the colder weather I love having the soups a couple of times per day, and when I checked the sodium, got to wondering about what we should have. I seem to be sensitive to water retention from too much sodium. Really appreciate the help!

The large amount of water we are supposed to drink should help with the retention issues. The key is to get that full 64 oz of pure water. We are allowed other drinks, but we need that pure water to flush out all the garbage that the fat cells are releasing!

BTW, rinsing canned green beans (and other canned veggies) before using them will significantly reduce the sodium. But I still say if you're on prescription medication and have been told to watch your sodium intake, then any questions about the amount of sodium you should consume should be directed to your doctor's office. No offense to anyone here, but we are not doctors and should not be giving out medical advice.

Del Monte makes no salt added canned green beans. Just an FYI. They taste like the can so you can definitely tell why they add so much salt to their regular beans.
