Salad Dressing Selection...

Postby MorningIce » October 10th, 2005, 1:31 pm

Need to find a dressing that a)isn't ranch and b)isn't a vinegrette. Anyone have any suggestions? Also, when shopping for dressing, there is "fat free"-usually with tons of carbs, or there is "carb-free"-usually with tons of fat!! Which is the better way to go??? Going shopping today, to get lost in the dressing aisle and come home empty handed again. :?

Hi Jena,
Here's a post explaining a little about salad dressings.

Salad Dressing

Also, if you do a search here on the forum for "dressing" (without the quotes), you'll find several examples of what other's are using.

Walden Farms is a popular one....

waldenfarms.com

I have kraft blue cheese FF ranch and blue cheese and catalina and have the amount we are allowed and don't think too much about it. Basically, I look for the FF with the least calories and carbs in the flavor I want and get it and get out of there quickly before I start over-thinking or slip myself up.

A trick I use is for the dressing is ----- assemble your salad and rinse it with water and shake it mostly dry. Then I put the dressing on the slightly damp salad and shake it until every part is coated some and let it sit 15 minutes or so in the fridge.

I also have the MF dressing but it is ranch and honestly, I was not too impressed but will do in a pinch.

Best wishes on the dressing of your dreams!

Thanks Unca and Gwenski!

The Walden Farms...have you seen them in any stores or are they mail order only? I'll check out the Kraft stuff for today then see about ordering some.

Great idea about the "salad shaking" too! :D

I have found Walden at Raley's and Ralph's but it isn't with the other dressings - it is in the health food or atkins sections -- I live in Northern California and it seems like it may be widely available in other places.

They have individual pre-made packs that I have been dying to get and just haven't yet -- you can also get Walden Farms from Amazon.com of all places.

Salad not drowned in tons of dressing just hurts me so I have been a bean and brocoli girl as of late. Gots to go what we gots to do!

Welcome to the MF world! ;0)

Watch that Catalina - the cals and carbs are not very low...

I often have nekkid salads or use just vinegar. My fave is Bernstein's Fat Free Cheese and Garlic Italian - it has 10 cals and 2 carbs per 2 tablespoons.

I like to use a little salsa instead of dressing, the fresher the better. Somebody here a long time ago suggested that and I thought it sounded crazy, but it's really good.

Yup, salsa is a great salad dressing - it adds a lot of flavor and is very low in calories/carbs. A little goes a long way if you really mix up the salad.

Often times we are used to drenching our salad greens with mayo-based dressings that sit on the top of the salad. Many of us have a penchant for mayo and cheese and after the top layer is gone, we ask for more dressing. By mixing up the salsa/low fat-low cal dressing into the salad, the flavor is incorporated throughout the salad and it satisfies our taste buds without expanding our waistline.

I also add water to my dressing up front - it seems to help. Mytime

I put my salad in a zip-close bag with the dressing and shake it up. It coats so well you can use less dressing.

And they carry Walden Farms at most of the supermarkets here in Arlington, Texas. They did when I was in San Diego, too. Sometimes with the regular dressings, sometimes with the diet foods.

DogMa ~

Flab-u-less Idea!

No wonder you are such a good loser: you follow the Medirules and you are getting a double arm work out when you shake your shake and shake your salad.

I suppose you could, I prefer to not use much dressing myself. There are a number of threads about dressings - use the search clicky feature...
