Rutabagas, Jicama, Parsnips, Celeriac, Sunchokes?

Wondering if we are allowed some of these wonderful root veggies? I doubt we can have the sunchokes, but the rest are very close in nutritional value to turnips, which are on the approved veggie list in the QSG.

Looking at turnips... a 1/2 C serving is 18 cal with 4g carb, 1 fiber and 2 sugars. Mind you that turnips are in the highest carb allowed category, so you don't want to go above that.

I would say the Jicama would be the borderline okay, and possibly the rutabaga (although that has more sugar).

Remember, the Quick Start Guide is pretty thorough and there are reasons that things are in it and not in it. There are those who say that if it isn't in there, then don't have it. I say make an informed decision.

Always go for the lowest sugar and the lowest total carbs with the lowest calories. Look at the whole thing.

Hope this helped.

I love root vegetables. My mother makes the best root vegetable soup in the wintertime.

Thanks Mike.
I never really pay attention to the sugars thing, usually just the fat, calories and carbs.. and vitamins if I'm lookin for somethin specific. I'll start looking at the sugars too then.

Can you tell me how many g of sugars we should be staying below per day?

I know the QSG is quite thorough, but to be honest, I had never even heard of jicama until about a year ago.. it's not very popular in the states, so I thought maybe it was never looked at.

So I'll skip all of it but the jicama.

Celeriac is basically the taproot of a specialized type of celery. Basically prepared much like you would a turnip.

Sunchokes, known as Jerusalem Artichokes are used for the stalk of the plant, much like other artichokes. The tuber root and stalk are cooked much like potatoes.

Gotta love Wikipedia.
