Replacement for Japanese Shrimp Sauce?

Postby ascicles » April 2nd, 2006, 2:56 pm

I love shrimp sauce (white sauce), but I don't really know the ingredients, so I'm not sure if it's allowed. Since it tastes so great, I'm going to assume that it isn't!

Does anyone have a good (legal) recipe that could replace this?

Edit: I found this recipe...

This is the shrimp sauce found in Japanese steakhouses. It is sweet and pinkish-orangish in color. You can substitute fat-free mayo, butter, and 0-calorie sugar, and it still tastes great.

Makes 1 1/4 cups (12 servings).

1 cup mayonnaise
3 tablespoons granulated sugar
3 tablespoons rice vinegar
2 tablespoons melted butter
3/4 teaspoon paprika
3/8 teaspoon garlic powder

So, if I made this and used fat free mayo, I can't believe it's not butter, and splenda, would this work on the plan? I'm not looking to cheat, but rather, find an acceptable replacement.

I cook japanese style vegetables almost every night, so I would really like to be able to use this sauce.

Well, the mayo has a couple of carbs per serving and 10 calories...The butter buds are 5 cals per serving I think. SO, if you're going to do this, stick to the "serving size" (it's easy for a little dab to turn into a big blob!). I'd also recommend not having a snack the day you're going to eat this :)

I think fat-free mayo is limited (and frequently has carbs added). Check your labels.

Well, the mayo that I bought 2g of carbs, 10 calories, and 1g of sugar per tablespoon. Since one serving (of this, mixed with the other things) would only be 1 tablespoon, I think it would work.

Sadly though, the taste is not what I was wanting. I am looking for the white sauce, and this turned out almost orange.

Are you thinking of a white, spicy dip? If so, it's typically a mix of Mayo, horseradish & seasonings... If that's it, I'll see what I can find recipe wise :)

I don't really think it's spicy. I'm looking for the white sauce that is typically found in express japanese restaurants. Usually it's in a big container where you can serve yourself.

I'm fairly certain that this is an American invention, rather than an authentic japanese sauce.
