Sugar and Skin
We all know about too many refined carbohydrates, like added sugar, can impact our diets and our teeth, but did you know that these can actually harm your complexion? In a process called glycation, simple carbohydrates (like sugar) attach to proteins in the bloodstream that damage collagen and elastin, the proteins that keep skin firm and supple.
The Take Shape For Life plan limits the carbohydrates (including sugar) being consumed each day, but when in maintenance, you’ll be responsible to know where your calories are coming from!
Maintainers should look for nutrient-dense and/or complex carbohydrates such as fruit, whole grains, beans and legumes. Strive to make “added sugar” no more than ten percent of your total calorie count. For an average 5'4", 45-year-old woman this is about 160 calories a day or the equivalent of one twelve ounce can of cola. Also check out new products for your skin that offer anti-glycation protection.
Now add THAT to the reasons we need to stay away from simple carbs and sugar!
