Question for my girlfriend

Postby Ark » July 2nd, 2006, 9:21 pm

My girlfriend has been on MF for about 4 weeks. She has stayed to the plan very well, with only a couple, very minor slipups. Now she is getting a bit disheartened cause currently, after 28 days, she's lost only about 9~10lbs. So she's 5'9", and started at 170lbs, and is doing the 5+1 MF plan. I'm wondering if this is normal, or is there something somewhere that we are not seeing that could be causing this slow weightloss? Do women tend to lose the weight slower than men? I've only been on MF 5+1 for 5 days now and am down 10lbs.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
As far as rate of weight loss, men generally lose faster than women (argh!). 2-5lbs a week after the first is what most people post losing. People who have a lot to lose often lose faster than those that have less to lose. If you think it would help your gf just to be sure something isn't sneaking in there that we might see, feel free to post what is eaten and when for a couple of days and we'll all see if we can see anything.

Don't let her get discouraged! We'll see if we can help!

Congrats on starting and your great losses BTW!

I was speaking to someone else, who although is not an expert, is quite knowledgable with MF. He was explaining that MF is something she does not need to be on seeing's she's only a tenth of a BMI point above normal weight for her height. Is this something i should be concered with? Is this causing undue stress on her body?

25 is the upper end of the BMI... man I wish I were there. Make sure she consults her Dr. about doing Medifast and if the Dr. seems to think its okay... then go for it. Your gf may want to lose down to somewhere in the middle. Its really just up to her.
She may also want to look into the maintainance plan... its more of a 3 + 2 plan. Have her talk to her HA regarding that after talking with the Dr.
That's my advice anyways. Hope it helps.

Low after WLS 300
Start of MF 350
Previous MF low 280

So she is losing 2.5 pounds a week. I think that is pretty good. Try losing that much on Weight Watchers.

Did she want to lose 30 pounds in a month? That is unhealthy.

Thank you for all the information. She has gone to a doctor before she started, explained the diet and got a physical/blood tests, he said it should be fine. I am going to talk to an HA about the 3+2 plan, last thing i need is her getting hurt.

Hi There,
Her losses look good to me. She doesn't have that much with which to part so her progress is going to be a bit slower. A loss of a little over 2 pounds each week is a very very healthy loss. Many many people have used the 5/1 to part with 10 - 15 pounds. It is a healthy program and she should be fine. She checked with her Dr. and he gave his approval. That's good enough for me. :D

Hello, Ark ~

I recently returned from being out of town and just read your inquiry about your girlfriend's progress on the 5 & 1 program. You raise several great questions here. Yes, women typically lose weight at a slower rate than men due to the fact that men generally have more muscle mass than the average woman. Their body needs more calories to sustain itself than women's and their body burns more calories than ours just 'being.' It is natural for people to compare their weight loss rates with others and yet it is not always in our best interest to do so...it drives us wild when we do!

Medifast products are ideal for people who wish to improve their nutrition, to lose a little bit of weight or a lot of weight. Even though your girlfriend doesn't need to lose much weight to reach an optimal weight for her height, she will benefit from the program and its nutrition. We can always take a look at her meal schedule and see how it looks.

Is she drinking plenty of water?
You don’t mention her activity level - does she exercise? If so, what does she do, how often? Perhaps her activity level is fairly high for the amount of food she is taking in – that can slow her progress. She is within the average weight loss range; however. People that do not eat a lot of highly processed foods with high fat and high sodium may not experience as much of an initial weight loss as those who do – I used to eat a lot of butter, salt, etc. so when I went on Medifast, I lost a lot of weight during the first couple of weeks.

Best wished to you both as you change the content of the foods you eat and the frequency of meals – eating for the health of it is a good thing!

Good luck to you!! It is a struggle to watch someone you love get frusterated over not being able to lose weight as fast as you! I have been on this for about 2 and a half months and lost 55+ pounds and my wife has been on it the same and has lost half that so I say 2.5 pounds a week is excellent, and maybe try to convince her to only weigh once a week and then maybe that will make her feel a little bit better! 8)
