Question about exercise and MF

Postby Lenainie » September 5th, 2006, 9:03 am

I need some help! I know it's early to be asking about this but I just bought my season pass for snowboarding and I'm not sure how MF will work with it. A good day (pow day) of boarding will be 4-5 hours of moderate to intense exercise. Will MF be enough calories to support that? I still have at least 2 months before the slopes open and there is no way I will have hit my goal by then. I don't want to stop MF completely for the season, but I also want to make sure I am eating enough to stay healthy. According to the charts I can find snowboarding burns 250-630 calories (at 100-200 lbs) an hour.
I'm wondering if it would be as simple as adding a meal each day I board (3 or 4 days a week) or if something more would need to be done. I really would prefer not taking a four + month break from MF so if I can find a modification that would be wonderful :)
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That's a lot of exercise to sustain on so few calories. You may just have to see how you feel, but I doubt an extra shake, or even two, will be enough for four to five hours of exercise.

I agree with Robin; that is way more exercise than MF was designed to support. I think I read it was designed to support up to 45 minutes of moderate exercise a day. You may want to consider an additional L&G or two on those days you are snowboarding; depending on how long and how intense you exercise on those days.

Generally speaking when I log my meals, at the end of the day my (BMR + calories burned via exercise) - calories consumed = 1100 - 1600 calories burned. If I was going to do some intense exercise for a day and planned to follow MF I would do some calculations to figure out what to add to my meal plan to stay within my normal range of calories burned.

Len,
Do you have a Health Advisor? If so, this is a good time to give her/him a shout... I think that the forum experts have given sound advice but another educated opinion sure won't hurt!

That is intense exercise and our 5 & 1 weight loss program does not provide the calories needed for caloric expenditures such as you describe. The Lean and Green meals provide roughly 350 calories, you would need to eat a couple of L & Gs and also have extra packets. I'm not a nutritionist; I must defer to the TSFL Nurse or Doctor for advice of that nature.

Obviously I am no expert, but I have taken up rock climbing and am enrolled in a class to teach me technique so I spend about 6 hours a week doing it. When I first started, I was feeling crappy and dizzy and sometimes when I was finished, I would feel cloudy.

I figured out that if I eat a bar 1 hour before climbing, and a hard boiled egg right before, and a shake or oatmeal right afterward, I feel alot better, and don't tend to be as sore.

I have not weighed since I added the egg, but when I was going with the 5/1 only, my weight stalled. I think I am still losing because my sports bra feels looser. I will weigh tomorrow morning and post on roll call.

Also, Nancy always gives great advice, so take what she has to say to heart.

As I get closer to snow season :) I'll be calling TSFL and checking in with my gastroenterologist and the nutritionist in his office to see what adjustments I should make. Thank you for all the input.
