Question about Chewable Calcium

Postby electra000 » April 26th, 2006, 9:03 am

I have a question about the Chewable Calcium that I have. I do not want to use it if it will mess up the ketosis. I have it left over from when I was on LA Weightloss. The serving size is 2 tablets. The bottle says amount per serving: Total Carbohydrate 1.56g
Sugars 1.16g
Vitamin D 266IU
Calcium 667 mg

The other ingredients list dextrose and fructose. My question is are dextrose and fructose like splenda or are they like sugar?

I'm thinking that I could use some kind of calcium supplement as well. I've always had problems with charlie horses at night, and that is usually attributed to a lack of calcium. I've noticed that I have them a little more often since starting this plan.

ascicles, I believe charly horses are contributed to a lack of potassium but check with your Dr. I would tell you to eat some banana's but that would be a no no.

:yay:

I am sure one of the HA's will answer your ?, but I know I asked Nancy about my calcium chewables, and she suggested due to the sugar and calorie content that I switch to just a calcium supplement pill.

I was instructed by my dr. to take the calcium since I had a hysto almost 21 years ago when i was just 25, so I really need it....

I bought just the pills and am doing fine with that, no added calories or sugars.... I think that is your best bet.

Thanks for the reply. I can't swallow pills very well, that is why I like the chewables. Maybe one of the HA's will know about the Fructose and Dextrose. I would just like to know about those two ingredients anyway since they are added to other things. I know Spenda is sucralose I think. I just get all of this confused. Terri

You could always crush them.

I have a whole bottle of the chewables that I hate to waste. So if I can find out if they are o.k. I will use them up before I buy tablets.

Well, that's a little over 3 extra carbs (12 calories). Medifast is pretty well balanced and with the 5& 1 you should be getting enough calcium. If your doc feels you need more, then I would recommend you take one in the morning and one in the evening AND cut out any extra's like Jello or MF Crackers.

Yep, fructose and dextrose are both simple sugars, Splenda® is a non-nutritive sweetener containing sucralose and is made from sugar.

I can understand your desire to use up what you have and not to waste it. The values you list are low and it is doubtful that they would adversely affect your weight loss.

Because I take corticosteroids daily for lupus and chronic hives, I need a calcium supplement to help prevent bone thinning (Prednisone can interfere with calcium absorption). I want thin hips but not thin bones, Kids!

I haven’t taken any calcium at all and I sheepishly approached the vitamin shelves of the pharmacy the last time I was at the clinic. My head was spinning because there are so many varieties on the shelf.

The eye of my sweet tooth spied some chewable calcium candy-like caramels. They looked tasty on the label and the flavors sounded so well, candy-like. I love candy! I especially love caramels…so I chose tablets rather than the chewables because I know me best…

I spoke with my pharmacist about what kind of calcium tablets to select for me. He said that calcium citrate was easily absorbed.

I was told I could take 6 Tums a day plus a vitamin D, or 3 Viactivs (The candy ones!) or 3 tablets of Os-Cal 500 plus D.

I don’t recall the label for the Viactivs, Tio. I think the ones you mentioned had about 40 calories. I’d set them aside and go for the tablets.

Electra, I hope that helps you.

Re: Leg cramps – most likely you’re in need of some bouillon. The Medifast Fast Soup is wonderful – it has sodium and potassium. Ordinarily I might say that you may not drinking enough water but oh, Great Kilted One, I know you drink 160 ounces of wa-wa/day! Have some bouillon. Order some Fast Soup and lemme know how you’re getting along!

Manly, maybe it's TOO much water. That could lower dilute your potassium and sodium levels, no?

Just want to throw in my Image

Fructose and Dextrose are sugars. I personally wouldn't use them, but that is your decision to make. I do take a calcium supplement, as well.

Leg cramps are normally associated with a potassium deficiency, but can also be attributed to calcium and magnesium depletion. If the fast soups don't work for you, then chat with your MD about Magnesium. I'm taking 400 mg per day, per my MD, and my leg cramps have eased up greatly.

I finally found sugar free chewable calcium! It is by Oscal and it is light lemon chiffon flavored. It has zero calories and zero sugars. Yea ! The reason I want to take additional calcium is because my Mom and Grandmother both have Osteoperosis. Just want to prevent that ! :D
