question about bars

Postby alpha femme » June 17th, 2006, 5:39 pm

i took a bar to a baseball game so that i wouldn't go too long between meals. i really looked for the first time at the nutritional value.... and was shocked.

i know the bars are higher in calories, so we can only have one.

but 12 grams of sugar and 21 carbs???

how do these things not knock us out of ketosis?

I know. I eat them only rarely, and I'd really like to get rid of all the ones I have and just stick to the other foods (and maybe the diabetic bars).

Some people do just fine with them, but others have a lower tolerance for carbs. And sugar.

But even with that many carbs and that much sugar, if you stick to one a day, you're still under the carb level Medifast recommends for the day. If they're not causing you any problems, I wouldn't worry about it. But keep track of how you feel and what the scale says after you eat them.

I always eat mine first meal of the day. Gets me going and compliments coffee pretty well. Then I have plenty of time to burn off the carbs.

They actually recommend that you not have a bar as your first or last meal of the day ...

I have eaten a bar every day since I started on medifast. I haven't really noticed any issues because of them. Without going into detail, I have found some workarounds regarding this issue.

Love the bars. I haven't missed a day. If they weren't ok, they wouldn't be offered. I think most of us won't be effected by them, but if my losing slowed to a halt, I would reconsider, of course. Nothing tastes as good as thin feels!

I always strive to NOT eat a bar every day, but I bring one to work for emergencies. And then usually by 2-3 PM I am dying for chocolate or something chewy, so I end up eating them every day!

I was going to try not to have a bar everyday, but I find that I really need that type of food. (especially today!) It's like a little bit of indulgence in my day. If my weight loss is a little slower because of it so be it.

I have had a bar everyday since starting MF. I have it at 3pm everyday to get me though till dinner as that is my worst time of day for the hungries.

I have not noticed any weight loss slowness yet. The bars will be cut back if I plateau.

I haven't seen any ill effects from the bars either. I do the same as Lori - I have mine around 3p with a cup of coffee or tea and it gets me through until dinner. I find I really look forward to that bar and coffee as a "treat". I guess if I see it is hindering me, I will have to stop having them but I am praying that doesn't happen - I LOVE my bars!

I've wondered the exact same thing about the shakes and puddings as well.

I had a similar concern about the bars, mainly the High Fructose Corn Syrup, but I figured since I have only 1 bar a day, or sometimes every other day, it's a ton better than how much HFCS I was eating prior, so in moderation, it cant be horrible. I was considering ordering the diabetic version of everything because I was consuming 20g-35g of sugar per day just on MF food alone. (If you ate banana shakes and chocolate pudding 5 times a day, that's 45g of sugar). I was reading that for every 2000 calories, 8% of that can be sugar, which is approximately 40g. Seeming as we consume half or less than half of those calories ...

But on the flip side, I was watching FitTV and the lady was talking about if you cut your sugars entirely, you tend to crave them more (but she was also talking about replacing bad sugars with natural sugars from fruits and veggies. Maybe that's why there's a lot sugar in them? Because we dont eat fruit? Or maybe it's to make them palatable?

I'd love to know though. Am curious.

I love the convenience of the bars but I have quit eating them too - too much sugar, and high frutcose corn is the worst! I have been buying Quaker Q=Smart bars instead - chocolate peanut butter - they have fewer calories, same protein, many many less carbs (2g net carbs) and are made with soy protein.

Plus they are DELICIOUS@
