question about bars

Questions/Comments about Weight loss Products.

Postby Guest » June 21st, 2006, 5:18 pm

Maybe I misread the earlier posts but I thought people were complaining about the bars being so high in carbs and sugar - not "EXTREMELY happy."

High frutcose corn syrup has been linked to diabetes, and recently has been shown to raise levels of LDL - bad cholesterol. It is not good for you so I try to avoid it - hence avoiding the bars.

Basically I think this is what someone else said too - no need to jump down my throat!

I am registered - just forgot to log in and now am scared too! Must be someone else who feels the same - noticed a couple other "guests"!!!

I thought this was a "support" forum - comments about the bars and their carbs are hardly controversial.

Maybe so much concern because this website also sells medifast products and someone is depending on this for their livelihood? I don't know.

I have a doctorate degree and tend to look at things critically instead of accepting things at face value.

While the carbs and added sugars concerned me from the beginning, they concerned me more after doing some research on their ingredients. I simply see no reason to eat the bars which are loaded with sugar and refined carbs. Of course this is my personal opinion. Lots of people seem to feel the same and eliminate them altogether. I don't have a problem with someone having an alternative that works for THEM, nor do I have a problem with someone sharing that information so others can make an informed decision!

The fact of the matter is we all have to transition to real food at some point and personally I think it is nice to know a couple of grocery store things we can gladly eat.

Many of us do not take things at face value. Personally, I think the main issue here is the recommendation of another product. Yes, I don't eat the bars anymore because of concerns over their ingredients. But I also don't go around plugging other products on a site dedicated to Medifast.

For many people, branching out to other products and substituting them for Medifast products can be a very slippery slope. Before you know it, they're not on the Medifast program at all, and then they post that they're leaving because Medifast doesn't work for them.

I just figured you were all the same guest. That's why you should always log in.

I wasn't referring to the carb content. I was referring to the medical claims by the "guest" (remember guests are all the same person here).

Maybe so much concern because we want people to succeed on the program. If someone wants to substitute a few off-brand bars, it certainly isn't going to affect us, but it may affect your weight loss. Half the people here don't even purchase their product from us.

That's a good thing. I commend you on your hard work and you're more than welcome to discuss it here. If we just knew who you were. As I said earlier, guests have zero credibility here. I could log in as a guest and become a brian surgeon or rocket scientist.

A good opinion and valid personal choice. That's what this forum is all about.

Not sure what you're recommending to gladly eat?

This is why I vote for not allowing guests on here. That and all the spam we get.

By the way, where did you get your doctorate? Are you practicing? In what state?

I am really curious about how you have so much time to advertise Quaker snacks since you must also have a really busy and super-important job.

Re: "many many less carbs"---I also would think that a doctor in any field would be able to use proper English grammar.

I don't think anyone has a problem with you voicing your own opinion, but your tone in response to other people's comments was pretty hostile and defensive.

I agree with Jen...completely...I did a little research on the web, and you're right, guest, the other bars contain less carbs and calories, but the rest is generally the same. In fact the Medifast bars have 10mg less of sodium and 2g less of Fat. The Protein is the same. I think that was the big qualm here. When we're all off Medifast, it'll be good to know about other products, but for now, most of us are doing our best to be strict on Medifast. One of the main reasons I'm here is because I tried doing it on my own and it didn't work. Medifast provides me with food in the proper divisions of calories throughout the day so I don't have to calorie/carb count. I agree that the main reason this has turned into controversy is due to the attitude of your responses to other people. I don't mean to be rude or harsh, but that seems to be what's going on. I hope things work out for you.

ok, ok, i'm sorry i ever started the post! sheesh!

in all honesty, the bars probably saved me some anguish yesterday. i have been a little depressed the last couple of days. when i feel down, i just cannot eat or drink.

a friend dragged me to a sparks game, and about half way through, i got so dizzy and weird-feeling that i seriously thought i was going to pass out just sitting in my seat. i happened to have a bar in my purse for emergencies. 10 minutes later i could stand up with minimal head-rush. the point? we need some sugar in our diet. not gobfuls of refined crap. but a little does not hurt.

do i wish the bars had less? absolutely. do they serve a need. hell yes. they are portable and dense. will i cut back to a couple a week? i think so. do i deserve a "treat" once in a while as i do my vlcd? yes, yes i do. because as i do the complete fast, i come here every day for support, and info, and just to feel like i am working on me. i feel best when i feel like i make good choices. chosing to have 1 bar a day or less is a very good way of exercising self control. it is part of our behavioral modification. at least, it is part of mine.

I have experienced the same thing with low sugars. It is not only good to have a little sugar in our diets, but imperitive to our health. I think that is probably the reason they're in the Medifast Diet Plan

OK, I do have to disagree on this one. I've looked into sugar a LOT over the years, and I'd like to know one study anywhere that says human beings require sugar. Carbohydrates, albeit at low levels, are essential; sugar is not. The body will convert carbs to sugar FOR you.

Yes, low blood sugar is dangerous, but there are much better ways to regulate your blood sugar than by EATING sugar, which will raise it temporarily (frequently too high and too quickly) and then drop it back down too low.

That's not to say that people should never have the bars; for most people, a little sugar isn't going to hurt. I still have one occasionally because they're convenient, but for me, the sugar content (not to mention the high fructose corn syrup) makes them a last resort and a rare treat.

ok...lemme clarify where I'm coming from... I'm hypoglycemic...even with eating all 5 medifast meals and with lean and green, my sugars sometimes drop a lot. So, I'm thinking that would happen more often if the food didn't contain the things it did contain. Does that make any sense whatsoever?

Have you tried the diabetic bars/shakes? I would think they'd do a better job of keeping your blood sugar level. I'm no doctor, but I had a friend who was hypoglycemic with lots of highs and lows (and I used to have a problem, too). She was put on basically a diabetic diet and told to eat every two-three hours. They told her to avoid sugar and simple carbs, and limit even complex carbs.

I don't have issues with high sugars, just low ones. My dad is a medical provider and keeps me on the right track with them.
