Oysters ?

Postby Karli » June 30th, 2006, 2:42 pm

Okay. I have done what homework I can do and have searched for 'oysters' as well as 'shellfish' -- and I have looked through what books I have about TSFL and MF. First, from what I have read, it is okay to eat shellfish, too... right ? I know shrimp is okay, and crab, but what about things like mussels, clams, oysters and scallops ?

The only reason I am asking specifically about oysters is because I have done a search on just them and the only thing ever talked about is the little oyster crackers that we can get from MF.

If we *CAN* eat oysters... why in the world aren't people talking about eating them ? hee hee.

Anyway, I just want to make sure because I don't want to be doing this program only to find out I am doing it wrongly.

Well, it just so happens that they are maybe my most favorite food in the entire world.

Thanks,
Karli  :boohoo:

Well, just my opinion, but I prefer NOT to put anything in my mouth that resembles a wad of snot. That is why I am not talking about oysters. If you can have them, you can have my share too. YUCK!!!

I eat raw oysters a couple times a week at work and it hasn't affected my loss at all.....now whether or not they're allowed is another question.....I have mine on the half shell with a bit of ponzu, tobassco, tai chili pepper and scallion......usually in addition to some sashimi....

Ahhh Tankie, you're making me jealous again.

Anyhooo, I also love oysters (and sashimi), but I have no idea if they are allowed. My guess would be yes since they're are a lean protein source and relatively low in calories. Use the web to look up their carb/calorie/protein makeup and that should give you your answer.

If I'm wrong I'm sure an expert will pop in and let you know. Personally I'd eat em' if I were you. :bib:

ooooo... thanks for the replies, ladies.

Well, I am doing some research and trying to figure some stuff out about it, but I feel I don't know enough about the program itself yet to know whether or not it is compliant to eat oysters.

Here are a couple of nutritional informations that I found :

1. NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION
Per 3.5 oz/100 grams of raw edible portion

Calories 81
Total fat 2.3 g
Saturated fat 0.5 g
Protein 9.5 g
Cholesterol 50.0 mg
Sodium 106.0 mg

Source: USDA

2. Nutritional Highlights
Oysters (raw), 6 medium
Calories: 57
Protein: 5.9g
Carbohydrate: 3.3g
Total Fat: 2.1g
Fiber: 0.0g
*Excellent source of: Zinc (76mcg), and Vitamin B12 (16.3mcg)

*Foods that are an “excellent source” of a particular nutrient provide 20% or more of the Recommended Daily Value. Foods that are a “good source” of a particular nutrient provide between 10 and 20% of the Recommended Daily Value.

Oysters are not a source of omega-3 fatty acids.

This is only 3.5 oz worth of raw oysters though and while there are less calories in them than chicken (and lower cholesterol levels, too), there is not as much protein. And, I don't know if there are actual specific protein amounts we would want to reach in our L/G or whether just saying so many ounces is fine.

Also, I suppose that with the oysters, one would want to eat them in greater proportions like the fish and poultry, rather than the beef and pork and so on. So, while 3.5 oz is about 6 medium raw oysters (plenty in and of itself) we are talking about needing to double that (at least) to equal 7 ounces of just raw meat (let alone the fact that it is less when meat is cooked). I guess I personally would need to supplement with another source of protein if I decided I wanted some oysters one evening.

hmmmmm... could still use a little clarification on this subject, if possible.

If you HAVE to have them, you could do the 3.5 ounces, and then 3.5 ounces of, maybe shrimp or fish?? Make it a seafood l&g. You could have the big ol wads of snot as a starter, then have a salad with either some boiled eggs as protein, or toss some shrimp in it with a lite italian or vinegarette dressing. That, I could go for. Having the salad instead of other veggies might keep you from feeling so full. I wish the HA's weren't at convention. They can tell you for sure. But, the nutritional value doesn't look too bad for something you wouldn't be eating everyday anyway.

Wow, Karli, sure sounds like you like oysters, huh?! :D In my 'other life', I used to love fried oysters, being from New England.

On the 'caloriekingdotcom' site, it states:
6 oz Pacific raw oysters = 138 calories and 16.1gm protein
6 oz Eastern wild oysters = 101 calories and 8.9gm protein

So, depends on the origin of the oysters, I guess. I didn't know there was a difference?! I would cook up enough oysters and then weigh them after cooking. Seems the Pacific oysters seem like the closest match to what our Lean should be.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, I also have learned that it depends on what kind I would purchase. And yes !! I do love them, however, 7 oz of cooked oysters is A LOT of oyster for me. We'll see... I am not planning to eat them until I get an official "okay" from the HA's ... and that probably won't happen until they are back from their mega-meeting together.

In my "other life" hee hee... I like that.... I also used to fry them . I would flour and cajun season them, then fry them up. They were really good that way. If I can have them while on MF, I am planning to grill them, bake them, or smoke them (not in a ziggy :-P ).

In the meantime, other meats it is :).

Thanks, and yes your response was helpful to me.

I just found this whole thread funny. I'm with Supermom on the oysters, but I feel Karli has every right to enjoy her oysters. My dad ruined oysters for me as a child by making oyster soup using canned oysters and I just have never gotten past that. :x I tried one on the half shell and it was just "wrong". So, as I continue to snicker over the wad of snot comment... have fun with the oysters.
Karli, perhaps you could talk Dayna and Roger into having them and invite you over :D

It is great that we have such diversity here--some like oysters, some don't for whatever their reasons! I think that your original question was whether it was compliant to eat the oysters and to get an idea of what a serving would be? :?: That answer has been provided in this thread. Enjoy the oysters, Karli, as will I, when I reach maintenance and have them fried every couple of months or so! They are great! ;)

mmmm... futuristic fried (f)oysters :boohoo:

Actually, right now I feel like I could really just take 'em or leave 'em.

But, maybe I will get some and then grill them sometime... we'll see. Thanks, ya' all, and Mike, I am glad you found this thread amusing.

bye bye,
