Newbie question

Postby KarenNY » March 7th, 2006, 9:15 am

Hi,

I am on day 2 and everything os far is going well. I just read that the meat serving size is after cooking - how do you figure this out before hand (know how much to make)? I have 5oz filet mignons that I get from Omaha Steaks - it is a good size steak - is that enough or should I have more (I only plan to have steak 1 or 2 times a week)?

Thanks

They're 5 ounces raw? You should be having a bit more. I'd weigh one after cooking and just see how much lower it is. If it's only occasional and it's really close, I wouldn't sweat it.

Sometimes if I have a chicken breast or something that's 6.3 or something (or even 7.2) instead of 7, I just let it go.

This is the problem I had. I weighed 7 oz. of chicken prior to grilling it, and when I was finished, it was closer to 5.8 oz. That's good news for me, because it means more food :)

I guess it is just something that we will learn to judge better after we've been on the plan for a while.

I always start with about 10 oz of chicken and it cooks down to about 7. If it ends up being more, I just give my doggy a treat. Hamburgers are about 5 oz. cooked if you start with 8 oz. raw. I always weigh after to make sure.
