It's up to ME, New York?

Postby HollyH » October 20th, 2006, 8:57 am

Okay, my parents are taking my husband and me on a free trip to NYC. We already have reservations for restaurants, shows, etc.... I don't see how I can stick to the plan for those days! We're going to Sardi's, Tavern on the Green, Trattoria del Arte.....should I just eat as healthy as I can? I have no problem doing the shakes for breakfast- but we'll be out and about ALL day EVERY day. Anyone have any pointers? I'm a little concerned. Thank you in advance!

I've been to NYC several times since I started and it's very easy to stick to program. I carried RTD shakes and bars along and didn't have to stop to eat like the rest of my group, lol. I was like "do we really have to stop to eat? You're wasting my shopping time!" When they ate, I had hot tea or coffee. I don't think there are many restaurants in NYC where you could not have a L&G meal. I did several times. The better the restaurant, the more willing the staff is to accomodate your preferences.

Having said that, everyone is not alike. I had alot of determination to stick to the MF program. Not everyone has the same motivation and not everyone is in the same place on their program. If you choose to go off program, I would still suggest keeping your meals low carb and low fat.....don't give yourself permission to go hog wild and you should be ok.

Holly,

I absolutely agree with Jo.

I have been on business and pleasure trips while on MF. I took bars and shakes and soycrisps. I did allow myself 1-2 L&G meals a day - if breakfast, I'd have a veggie omelet, and tell them to leave off the cheese and no toast or potatoes on the side. If at lunch or dinner, I'd order lean meat or fish, and tell them to double the side of veggies and leave off the potato, bread whatever. I was able to still maintain my weight, or even lose, those weeks!!

Have fun!

:D Thank you both so much! I've only been on MF for 3 1/2 weeks now. I don't want to blow it. I'll definitely bring the bars, shakes, etc.. and stick to the healthy stuff.
My husband and friends say that I'll be doing so much walking that it won't matter, but I don't want to gain at all if possible.
I'll be sure to post when I get back (going from 11/1-11/5)...it'll be a challenge!

I agree with Jo and Elidh; you won't have trouble sticking to your plan. I live here and can vouch for numerous restaurants that will accomodate your Lean & Green request. If you have your bar and shakes with you you will be ok. If you are going to run around a lot, you may want to have an extra shake - like do a 6 and 1. Nancy told me that was ok when we are overextended or keeping late hours.

Enjoy this great city I call home.

Hey, Holly, we here in NYC are looking forward to having you - um, and the other 4 million folks who come during the holidays! :-)

Like everyone said, especially Nat (since she and I both live in the city), it's very easy to function here on MF. Actually, I think functioning in NY is easier than anywhere else, because ANYTHING GOES! There's no protocol you have to follow, no particular rules of any kind, especially dining times! First of all, when it comes to breakfast, so many people never eat breakfast, so I personally wouldn't waste having an extra L&G at that meal. I would recommend (based on my own travel experiences) that you make an oatmeal or have a shake in your room before heading down to breakfast, and then just having tea or coffee at the table.

Then mid-morning you can do a bar or shake or, and I have done this a million times, go into any one of our trillion little delis/groceries (they're on every block, and I am not exaggerating), and buy a cold bottle of water and ask for a cup and a spoon, and make yourself a pudding. Or ask for a 1/2 cup hot water, and make yourself an oatmeal. Totally easy, I swear!

You can have your L&G at lunch or at dinner, but if you really feel odd not dining, you can split it and have 1/2 the protein and 1/2 the veggies at each of them. There are very few restaurants, including the ones you mentioned, that won't accomodate your needs. Just ask for things steamed or grilled, no sauce, and minimal oils. Have lots of water too!

Holly, I agree with Jo that your degree of staying on this during your trip is dependent on how committed you want to be right now. Let me tell you that if you stick to plan, which you can so easily do, you will have the greatest sense of accomplishment upon your return, you will know you can do anything! I went to Aruba 6 weeks into my MF journey, stayed to plan exactly, and knew that if I could do that, I would reach goal. I just knew it. Wouldn't it be great to treat yourself to that feeling of satisfaction?

Just my (not so) humble opinion! But whatever you decide, have a wonderful time, it's the best city in the world!

 Okay, you guys have me revved up and ready to go! I had no idea I could break up my L&G's if I needed to. I will bring my big purse, and my RTG shakes...I'll be all set. Yes, I want to feel fabulous and in control while there, and when I get back. I can't wait to NOT take a bite out of the Big Apple!
Thank you guys! I'm loving this support group!
