New Scale

Postby Pashta » April 3rd, 2006, 6:38 am

So I thought my old scale was funny cause it wouldn't read the same weight all the time and I got a bright shiny new one, with fat % and body water % too! Very lovely. :) However, it shows me as 2.4 pounds higher than the old scale :x , and yes I stepped on the old scale again today just to make sure I didn't gain 2.4 pounds in one night, and it still said 222, and was balanced on 0 when I stepped off  .

So what should I do? Should I increase my starting weight and current weight on my tracker so it still shows the weight I have lost correctly? I want to use the new scale, since I did pay $60 for it LOL!

Did this happen with anyone else?

I have noticed that the digital scales are much more accurate. I am guessing the one you bought is a digital one. My suggestion would be to increase your start weight and go with the new digital scale from now on.

Yep that's what I did, but 2.4 pounds difference?? That seems to be a really big variance. I was a bit shocked.

Yeah, it's not at all uncommon to have up to a 5# variance from scale to scale. I think you did the rght thing by raising your starting weight and keeping the same weight lost :) Keep up the good work!!!

You know what bugs me... this scale said I only had 36% body water and 47% fat or something. Is that possible? I really don't think that is correct, could it be my slight dehydration would make it read wrong, or is that really right?? I don't think I look half fat, jeesh.

The scales that "measure" body fat are not really that accurate -- the only way to really determine body fat percentages is by using the calipers (many nutritionists/personal trainers and other professionals use these) and/or the special 'dunking' test that is used by universities and sports training facilities.

If I were you, I'd just pay attention to the weight portion of the scale -- you have enough to worry about without thinking about how what percentage is fat, water, bones, etc.! ;)

It can't be right because it varies wildly by up to 10% within a few seconds... but that makes me mad because I paid $60 for that scale lol.. could have paid $30 for just a regular digital one. Oh well, seems the water % works a little better. I am dehydrated a lot even though I am drinking 6 15 oz glasses of water a day. Guess I should increase it!
