New Gadget ...

Postby Arklahoma » October 14th, 2006, 8:43 pm

Just bought a new gadget ... The Garmin Forerunner 205 which is a GPS device built into a watch that continuously monitors time, distance, pace, and calories burned when you walk/jog/run.

Got it in the charger, and can't wait to use it as soon as the sun comes up. I've never really been much of an exerciser, but I have discovered that I am actually obsessed with tracking performance and competing with myself. This new toy just feeds right into my addiction.

I track every calorie that goes into my mouth with fitday, so why not track every calorie I burn, right?

I thought I was covering a lot more ground and moving faster. For example, it tells me that I walked 2.86 miles in 46:26 (min/sec). My average pace was 16:14 minutes/mile and my avg speed was 3.7 mph; however, I must point out that I did reach a max speed of 6 mph.

The calorie expended feature is obviously not working b/c it states that I burned 1128 calories. Fitday claims 157 but every other calorie calculator states 296 so I think I burned 296.

Looks like I have some work to do, but at least now I have a benchmark.

I LOVE gadgets!! But I suppose using a GPS device on my treadmill would be overkill even for ME.

The calorie calculators drive me crazy. Each one has such different readings. I'd love to believe I burned off 500 calories, but what if I eat 300 extra calories and I only burned off 200? Argh. Keep us posted on how well you think it works. Inquiring minds want to know.

Cool toy!

Now I feel like my pedometer is so last century! But, I'm saving for a video ipod so I just have to pine for your toy!
