Motivation is a choice

Postby jump4joy » May 5th, 2006, 5:16 pm

I've been reading Linda Spangle's new book "100 Days of Weight Loss" and wanted to comment on Day 41..."Motivation is a Choice". She says that you "create motivation through your thoughts, your self-talk, and your attitude."

I agree completely with this lesson...I lived it, experienced it as I've lost weight many times over the years. You usually don't start out with the kind of strong willpower that we often feel while we're in the weight-loss Zone. We first start out with desire and motivation, but the strong sustaining motivation, growing into willpower, that KEEPS us going doesn't come until later...it's created out of the momentum of a series of successful days, weeks, months.

Several years ago, I saw an Oprah show about weight-loss with Bob Greene, and they said some profound TRUTHS that I wrote down because they are true and POWERFUL. (at least to me)

"Discipline comes by DOING it. Willpower comes from the willingness to WORK.
"Willpower = Strength gained over Time.
"How hard are you willing to work?
"No excuses.
"Be willing to do what's necessary to change your life."

So Motivation and Desire to change are the things we need to START and continue our journey. Willpower and strength grow over time as you build momentum through the accumulation of successful choices and days. It's as simple (and as hard!) as DOING it...doing the program...just getting through each day and doing it. Each successful day you make it through builds upon another and another, until after many, many days like that one you will find yourself at goal. Our bodies will always count every calorie we put into them, whether we do it or not. Just wanted to share some of my thoughts on the subject.

P.S. This is my 100th post.

I LOVED your post!

I agree 100% that motivation is a choice. I also agree that 90% of our weight-loss struggle is mental! It's something I've been fighting forever! Thanks for putting it into words!

Yes, I think it's a really good book to have....especially for maintenance since some of the chapters wouldn't be applicable to those on Medifast....but many of them are VERY useful. A lot of it is repeated in her "Life is Hard, Food is Easy" book (which I have, too, but I'm glad I have both). I think that her book "Success in a Shaker Jar" is a MUST HAVE if you're currently on the MF plan! I've practically worn my copy out and highlighted it to death. You can order it through this site at TSFL....if you don't have it, I would highly recommend it.
