Milk of Magnesia-Did I Mess Up???

Postby bikipatra » December 2nd, 2006, 2:06 pm

I have been constipated for days despite drinking huge loads of water...the only remedies available around the house were natural fiber laxative and milk of magnesia. The fiber stuff I have lists SUCROSE as the first ingredient so I didn't take it. I also have some castor oil (I use it to help grow in my eyebrows, don't ask) but I thought I might absorb too many calories from it. So I settled on some Milk of Magnesia because sucrose is listed as the LAST inactive ingredient, but that stuff tasted awfully sweet. Is it enough to throw me out of ketosis? At this point a decent crap might be worth it....argh!!! What should I do??? I went to the corner store and they didn't have any of those fiber caplets...the agony of it all. I took one big slug of MoM....

As a follow-up, I checked out their website and no calorie/sugar info is listed-it just says that if you are a diabetic you should consult with your doctor before tasking as with all medications!

I researched the bayer site (www dot bayer dot com) and the products list no claorie info. It does list sucrose as a lower ingredient on the Wild Cherry flavor, but give the dose is 2 T at a time and given what this product actually does... I would say it would have little to no effect on ketosis.
Perhaps some of those out there with actual medical or pharmacological training may know more.
If it were me though, I would say no worries. My SF Halls says each drop is 5 calories, so if the MOM doesn't say anything, its probably less than 1 cal per serving.

Earlier, I went to the same website and found what you did. I just worried because it is so DARNED cloyingly sweet and I didn't measure, I took a big chug! I know I am obsessing but at this point I weigh exactly what I did last Sunday (after only 5 days on Medifast) and it will take a miracle to have a good weigh-in for roll-call! I am just going to stick with the program...thanks so much for the research.

I was able to hit the "sandbox" successfully and lost 1.5 pounds overnight so I guess it wasn't too bad. I am going to go to a better store and find some fiber capsules though!

Hey biki ~

Definitely look at the info on those capsules -- the only ones I found had lots of carbs in them! Nancy mentioned a sugar-free metamucil that isn't too bad, but it was just way too expensive for me to try to see if it worked (about $15 for a small bottle).

Someone else mentioned a teaspoon of flaxseed (not the oil, but the actual seed) to help, with minimal or no carbs. Hope it helps!!

We have a local healthfood store-maybe I should look there for the flaxseed. Thanks for the heads up!
