meringue powder, baking soda, and others.. allowed?

Postby KellyC » July 5th, 2007, 12:49 pm

Looking through my pantry, I see things that I would love to cook with, but I don't know if it is allowed.. and alot of them have no nutritional value printed on them.

Baking soda
Baking powder
Cream of Tartar
Meringue powder
yeast
gelatin powder
glucose
champagne vinegar
olive oils that I infused with different things like rosemary, sage, lemon, basil, jalapeno
sesame oil
peanut oil
safflower oil
sunflower oil
avocado oil
coconut oil
grapeseed oil
walnut oil

I think all of the oils are monounsaturated, except for the coconut, that one is saturated and walnut is polyunsaturated I think.

is it obvious I love to cook and experiment with flavours? Lol...

Thanks!

Kelly, If I were you I'd google and find a good nutrition sight to tell you what the values are. I would stay away from anything that has alot of carbs (even a few can make a difference) or fat. From your list, though I didn't read it all, I would say that glucose is definately a no-no....that's sugar. I think I remember that cream of tartar has alot of carbs, but don't bet the bank on it.

I don't think it does (cream of tartar), because Atkins used to use it in his meringue recipe. Plus you usually use just a tiny bit.

The infused oils would be fine, as long as you counted them as a fat like regular olive oil.

You might call the company/nutritionist and ask about the others. Out of curiosity, what would you use the yeast in if not baked goods??

Thats it exactly, baked goods.
I'm playing around with bread recipes, super low carb. So far, I'm not tasting them, I'm using Jeremy as a guinea pig. ;)

Kelly,

I think they are considered condiments. (not more than 3 condiments per day) They are listed in a download on the mymedifast site under success tools, downloads and condiment recommendations.

Baking powder = 1/2 tsp
baking soda = 1 tsp
Cream of tarter = 1/2 tsp

You could probably count the oils as your additional fat servings when appropriate.

You could also email the MF nutrition folks or call and get more answers.

Let us know about any great recipes you come up with! :)

Isn't that what men are for? This thread is making me think of my grandmother who died when I was 9. I still remember how good her lemon meringue pie was. My mother makes lemon and chocolate ones too, especially around the holidays, but her lemon one isn't as good. Neither is her potato salad, and my mom is a phenomenal cook. I was so happy when she taught me how to make her pot roast. I ended up making it for my husband's family in South Africa and they loved it.

I can't see the mymedifast site, since I'm Canadian, it never let me register for the online thing. :(
So thanks for the information!

Lemon meringue.. Im fiddling with a version of that too, lol...

I can't replicate Grandma's cooking either.. even though she's given me the recipes, and taught me step by step in her kitchen since I was 4. I think they just have some sort of Grandma essence that is somehow infused into the food.

Try the support in motion site Kely. Its very similar to mymedifast and as a TSFLer you can.

I had a hard time registering for the MyMedifast site also. Don't know why. I emailed MF and they emailed me back with a code that worked. I haven't looked at the support in motion site to see if the info is there also.
