-- Survey Reveals That 94 Percent of Moms Don't Have Enough Time to Focus on Their Health --
BALTIMORE, May 3 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Medifast, Inc.
(NYSE: MED)
the leading clinically proven portion-controlled weight loss program,
conducted a nationwide survey of moms who shared their experience of the
challenge they face with balancing healthy eating and family life.
The most notable results include:
-- 94 percent of moms do not have enough time to focus on their health.
-- 66 percent of moms said they snack throughout the day in place of
eating healthy meals.
-- 45 percent of moms said they believe it is more important for their
family to eat healthy than for themselves to eat healthy.
-- 45 percent of moms have tried more than three diet programs in the past
six months and have been unsuccessful.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 55 percent of the
country's estimated 80.5 million moms have a career and are raising a
family. The Medifast survey of 121 moms revealed that eating healthy is
often secondary when balancing work and a family life.
"Moms manage numerous responsibilities at home and at work, and it's
often a challenge to find time to prepare healthy meals or exercise," says
Medifast Director of Research and Development Lisa Davis, Ph.D., PA-C, who
is the co- author of The Secret Is Out: The Medifast Program. "Medifast
offers a convenient weight loss solution that is easy to follow without the
calorie- counting or time-consuming preparation, helping moms achieve
long-term health."
With the rising rate of obesity -- 68 percent of all adults in the
United States are overweight and 30.5 percent are obese, according to the
American Obesity Association -- moms admit they're concerned that their
children will develop poor eating habits as they grow older. When asked
about being a positive example, 100 percent of moms said they believe it's
important to set a good example for their family by eating healthy.
For new moms in particular, the adjustment of a growing family is
challenging, especially when many moms are hoping to return to their pre-
pregnancy weight. "After giving birth, it was difficult to prioritize my
health needs in tandem with the needs of my family," says Ruia Mohammad, a
Medifast user of one year who has lost over 70 pounds with the Medifast 5 &
1 Program. "Once I found a program that met my needs, I was able to commit
to losing weight, and fit my family's health needs in with my own."
To help moms live a healthy life and sustain their energy level
throughout the day, Dr. Davis shares the following five strategies for
success:
Time-Saving Strategies to Start Eating Healthier
-- Space Your Meals Carefully -- It's easy to become distracted and
begin skipping meals, so begin each day by reviewing your schedule and
planning a time to eat breakfast, lunch, dinner and also three small snacks
in between. Eating every 2-3 hours will prevent cravings and help you
regain control of your appetite.
-- Go For Lean and Green Meals -- It's an easy phrase to remember and
the golden rule of eating healthy. Choose lean meats and green vegetables
to satisfy your hunger and to prevent cravings.
-- Drink Water -- Water doesn't cause you to lose weight, but it does
increase your body's efficiency by eliminating the body's toxins. Without
at least eight glasses of water per day, your body can become dehydrated,
which will trick your mind into thinking you're feeling hungry.
-- Eat Slowly -- Spend at least 10 to 15 minutes eating your meals.
Savor your food, chew slowly and for dinnertime, enjoy the opportunity to
catch up on your kids' day.
-- Set a Goal -- It's important to establish and maintain goals for
exercising and healthy eating. Keep a daily journal to hold yourself
accountable for reaching your goals. Be sure to celebrate with your family
and friends when you accomplish your goal.
