Medifast not for everyone!

Postby hollyhouse » March 15th, 2006, 10:14 am

Im really starting to think that this diet just isn't healthy. I have had horrible mood swings and feel like im starving half the time and not to mention weak. so what is the point of all this?

Why not just try to eat healthy and enjoy life and keep active?

If this is making me miserable beyond belief then i ask why even bother?

Unless your being very overweight is a health issue but maybe my weight isn't so bad for me.

Life is just way too short. there has got to be a better way.

wish everyone the best of luck

Holly, sorry to hear you are having such a hard time with Medifast. I can only speak for myself and say that MF has been the answer I was looking for. Fortunately, I haven't had the same experience you have had. But you are right, not every weight loss program is for everyone and maybe this just isn't for you. With MF, you have to be committed to sticking to the program the way it was meant to be followed. If you don't, you will be hungry and feel weak. MF is not an easy way of life, that's for sure!

I really hope for the best for you no matter what program you decide upon. Good luck and much success!

holly,

I am sorry to hear that you having such trouble with the diet. I have to assume that the hunger, mood swings, etc stem from the extras that you add into your plan like nuts, cheese, etc. I have been on this plan for 8 months and i feel wonderful. I have energy that i have never had before and am only hungry at about the time when I am supposed to eat again. I know that this diet works. It works very well for me. Never in my life have I been even remotely close to getting to my goal before i give up. I am really close now and have no desire to give up (although I have to admit, getting close causes a little bit of senioritis for me).

It is true that this may not be the diet for you, but is completely untrue that the diet is unhealthy. It was designed by doctors and is healthy when it is followed as designed.

I wish you all the luck in the world with your weight struggle and am sorry that so far medifast has been difficult for you. If you choose to continue with it, I would suggest giving it 3 full days with no additions or changes to the plan. The fourth day will be easier and by the end of the week, you won't really desire the extras, they will be so much easier to pass up. But you have to give it at least three days with no cheating before your hunger pains go away. Good luck again.

holly darling~
you are the only one who can judge what is the right thing for you.
i agree that life is too short to feel miserable when you don't have to.
i have been following your struggle in the previous threads and i think that you have definitely tried hard to follow the mf rules.
maybe the strictness does not fit into your lifestyle. it sounds like you enjoy excercise, and maybe that is a hurdle as well as the low calorie intake. you may be pushing yourself too hard, which would explain the weakness you feel. it was a big accomplishment to lose the 15# you already have!
ultimately, you should do what you have to do to feel better, mentally and physically. maybe you should consult a nutritionist, or a holistic health counselor. maybe our support can cheer you up :)
whatever you chose to do, i am sure that you will be missed if you decide to give up mf. we would all love to see you reach your goals!
take care holly.always believe in yourself. you are worth it!
pm me anytime.

I beg to differ.

Medifast IS for everybody. Everybody that has their healthcare providers support, a desire to lose weight and be healthy, a commitment to follow the program as it is designed and the willpower and determination to get real about what they need to do and why they struggle with their weight.

Medifast is a tried and true program that has been designed and tested by the best of the best. It is nutritionally sound, tasty and completely safe when used in the recommended manner and offers some of the very best results available to the general public looking to make healthy changes to their lifestyles. It is one of the truly viable options to overcoming obesity and ill health and for a great number of people, a healthy alternative to weightloss surgery.

Additionally, for a great number of people who struggle with weight issues, medifast is a truly life changing and mind altering experience. It gives people the results needed to stay focused and the tools needed to alter previous ways of thinking and bad food habits and choices and offers a healthy alternative. The lessons learned while in the weightloss phase, such as the consumption of five/six small, HEALTHY meal choices a day, along with the ever necessary water to stay hydrated are things that carry over into the maintenance portion of life AFTER medifast as tools to help keep us healthy and at a desired weight.

There is NO program out there that offers a magic pill. Each and every program that is available involves a level of commitment and a willingness to follow rules and participate in a manner according to the program guidelines. medifast WILL work for you, if you are willing to stick with it and work the program. What medifast will NOT do is guarantee that you will never struggle with food decisions again. The biggest part of this program is the necessity to alter our ways of dealing with food AFTER the weightloss program to maintain the losses achieved. The burden of that lies solely with the individual.

Those reading this that are considering trying medifast or are struggling; heck, even those just zooming along, the proof is out there. Feel free to search these forums and all available media at your disposal. Speak to your Doctor. Make informed decisions about what is best for you individually. I guarantee that this is one of the better programs out there, if not the best.

With the desire and the will to succeed, we can ALL reach our goals with medifast. What will YOU choose?

My two cents.

No offense, but based on the posts I've been reading from you, it sounds like you keep changing the plan to fit your needs...and as such, you're never actually getting beyond the initial level. I think that if you would follow the instructions and stick with the guidelines in the Quick Start booklet, the plan would work fine.

You are probably right though. I may be wrong about this, but I've been told that this plan isn't recommended for people who want to lose vanity pounds. Twenty-six pounds sounds to me like something that you should probably focus on losing through exercise and a balanced diet.

Medifast is a bit extreme, because it is geared toward people who need something extreme to help them lose a larger amount of weight.

To others out there, I wouldn't judge Medifast based on this. The Medifast program doesn't include nuts, Snowball snack cakes and the various other foods mentioned in previous posts.

If you follow the plan, it works. If you follow the plan for a few hours a day and then binge on junk food for the rest of the day, it won't. Plain and simple.

And please set your goal weight based on the healthy-weight charts out there or your doctor's advice. If your goal weight is below the healthy weight for even small-framed people of your height, it's most likely too low and you should rethink it or discuss it with a health professional.

Holly

I am not sure that you will even read this and I seriously debated on whether to post or not on this subject but I feel that for anyone new out there who is looking for the right way to lose weight it would be an injustice NOT to post.

First of all Medifast is a 100% healthy way to lose weight. I have a wonderful Dr. who refuses to prescribe diet pills and is totally against the Atkins diet as well as the other fad diets out there. HE is the one who told me to try Medifast and believe me he has researched it very carefully and I know that I am not the only patient that he has recommended this to.

I can tell you and anyone else reading this that I feel better now after just 2 months on Medifast than I have in years.

I stopped responding to your posts a while ago because more times than I can count I encouraged you and even PM'd you begging you to get an HA (free of charge) or lean on me and yes even to get professional help.

It saddened me to read over and over again how you continually adjusted the diet to fit how you were feeling that day and to see countless people spending time pouring their hearts out to you to help you. I read through all your posts recently and this is not meant to be mean but this is a support board where we all come to support one another and encourage each other and the best part to congratulate each other for goals reached whether it was 10lbs or 100lbs but when reading through your posts I could not find one where you encouraged, supported, or celebrated with the others on the board who support and encourage you.

Now you get upset because someone who cares showed you a little tough love and you decide to blast the program. That is just not right. This diet is for EVERYONE, everyone that is who is serious about losing weight and is willing to sacrifice whatever they have to in order to get healthy.

I do think that you are right in that Medifast is not for you personally and I hope that you find something that works for you.

Sorry if this was harsh but Medifast has literally changed my life and I don't like to see anyone bash it in such a blatant manner on such an open forum.

Re: Medifast not for everyone!

Postby BerkshireGrl » March 15th, 2006, 9:43 pm

First off, I have to speak in Hollyhouse's defense - she has made supportive posts.

That done... Hollyhouse does have a pattern of going off the plan and then venting on here about it. She got upset at recent responses and seems to have left in search of more of a blog atmosphere where she can just confess to silent cyberspace... which I personally would not get much from, but whatever works for you Hollyhouse! :)

Anyway... Medifast is a great way to lose weight, for any lurkers out there, or people on the fence. I wanted to toss my hat in the ring and say this too. It is VERY healthy! Easy? No. Unusual? Yes. But dang, it WORKS.

Yes, you WILL feel weak, hungry, miserable, etc., if you do not stay true to the program for the first 3 days. Once in ketosis, it becomes remarkably easy to do (imho.)

You will still have "head hunger" or the mental munchies, but you won't really be physically hungry until a little bit (half hour or so) before your next MF meal. Least, that's what I've found! :)

If you love to exercise hard-core, for more than 45 minutes a day, or at an intense level, and you cannot stand to not do this, MF will probably not work for you. It's just not designed to support workouts that burn several hundred calories. I mean, how could it, being about 800 calories a day?

There are lots of ways to lose weight - Hollyhouse might do best with more calories, more exercise, and more carbs. You might too, reader, but if you like what you see here, do not be deterred by one customer's bad experience with Medifast - which was (unfortunately) pretty much brought on by her own actions.

Holly - best of luck to you, and I hope you find the support you need out there!

Holly,
I am sorry you are struggling so. I too have struggled im my weightloss over the years. I have felt like quitting the program many times (not the programs fault) but this time I have committed to myself that I will see it through. This forum has meant allot to me and has been a sounding board. We all get frustrated and angry at times when we are dieting, lets face it we are having to give up something that we love.

As far as health and this program, this has improved my health. If you are having health issues maybe you should talk to a doctor. The time must be right to do this. Before you abandone the program wait until you are not frustrated to make that move. I care as do most everyone here. Good luck in your decision. Ron

p.s. you should talk with nancy personally before you leave

Wow! ganged up

Postby hollyhouse » March 16th, 2006, 8:30 am

Nice how eveyone ganged up on me. Ha!

I've read what you all had to say. And i do agree with some of your posts.

I never said that Medifast wasn't a good program.

JUST NOT FOR ME BECAUSE:

I should have done this before i started but,

I went to my Dr. and because i have health issues He does not recommend this kind of diet.
I have Mitral Valve prolapse with severe regurgitation- usually doesn't bother me but he says severe dieting causing a multitude of symptoms.
one of which is severe anxiety,Palpitations
And i have Hashimotos which causes the mood swings and a severe diet makes it even worse. It is a known fact that if you have any kind of emotional disorder you shouldn't be doing this program.
I am just saying what my dr said and sharing this with you all .
So you can see that for most of you this is a good diet. Just not for me.

Im sure if i was in the obese category he would recommend it but i am at a healthy weight. and like someone said here my xtra weight is more "vanity" weight that i am trying to lose. so again for ME . eating six small balanced meals a day a proper exercise should be fine for me.
Health is more important.

So in support of all you believers in medifast this is a great program for YOU! It is scientifically proven to work as long as you follow the program to a tee because like atkins you need to get your body into a state of ketosis. You can buy the ketosis sticks to see if your in ketosis .

Believe me i know all about this otherwise i wouldn't have spent hundreds of dollars buying two months worth of food.

I did get alot of pms from very supportive people who can relate to what i am going through and i thank all of you for that support.

Also falisamarie if you read back in my posts i did support others and YOU and im shocked at that statement.

I wish you all the best and much success!

MVP?

Postby Pashta » March 16th, 2006, 8:43 am

Hmm, I have mitral valve prolapse as well, and yet my doctor recommended going on a 800-1000 calorie diet, and no I'm not extremely obese and my health isn't at risk from the weight I'm carrying right now.

This is an extreme plan though, and I guess the few pounds you want to lose just aren't worth it to you. NP though, good luck in your search for what will work for *you*. :)

Holly

First off let me say that I am so glad that you finally went to see a Dr.

Secondly I did read back through your posts and did see where you did show some support and encouragement to others so please let me apologize to you openly here and ask for your forgiveness.

Honey whatever route you chose to take in life has to be the best for you and I don't care what anyone in your life tells you I am quite sure that you are a beautiful person. Don't lose sight that you need to learn to be happy with yourself and once you are you will see that in life that is what truly counts.

I wish you all the best my dear in all that life holds for you. Take care of Holly first and all the rest will simply fall into place.

Hugs

Holly, I'm so glad you finally went to the doctor and got some good advice!! That's all we were asking.

Now just please deal with that person in your life who is telling you you're "gross" because of your weight. No one deserves to be treated that way, and no one should LET someone treat them that way.

Best of luck to you!
