Medifast and Family

Postby pixiewhispers » May 2nd, 2006, 1:10 pm

I have a husband, a 13 year old son, and a 8 year old son. I have read everywhere that we should throw out all of our "bad food" But I can not do that, or my guys won't have anything to eat.

I work with my husband, and always eat lunch with him. I have explained that he will have to start eating sandwiches instead of "us" eating out everyday. He says he is fine with that. And claims he will do whatever it takes to support my Medifast routine.

But I still have the problem of food at home. Do any of you have this problem. And if so, what do you do???

Ironcially I'm okay at home, it's the family meals where my whole family gets together that really tempts me. What I had to do the first few days - and still do from time to time - is tell myself "I love myself more than ___" (insert food of choice in the blank). That really helped me.

I'm able to get my daughter snacks, I even held a bowl of cheese puffs in my hand and didn't want any.

Now, the birthday dinner for my father and grandmother Saturday night, that was a WHOLE different story!

I have a hubby, a 17 year old daughter, a 16 year old daughter and an 8 year old son. All 3 of my children are underweight. My 17 year old is quite tall and runs cross country and is very health conscious. My 16 year old is a competitive swimmer who swims 3 hours daily and lifts weights 3 hours per week. My 8 year old has ADHD and Aspergers and because of medications, he does not eat well and we have to give him 'days off' on his meds to get him to eat.

I was not able to empty out my pantry, frig or anything else. My family is very supportive of me and for the first week or so tried to keep their snack food eating away from me. Those snack foods are here all day with me, I buy them too, but I have been able to keep them away from my mouth.

When tempted, I have to make a conscious effort to talk to myself. I also keep repeating: "nothing tastes as good as thin feels". I want to be thin again, I want to have my family be proud of me, I want to stop feeling like I'm that 'fat mom' in the group (which in most cases, I am). I think my desire to lose weight has overpowered those snack cravings.

I'm not saying it has been easy. I have gone in that pantry, looked very hard at that food and then gone to my water bottle and guzzled it down, or found a sugar free jello or celery stick. I also find that if I truly think about it, I'm not really hungry when I go on a pantry safari...

Haven't Changed My Kitchen Contents

Postby Bling Bling » May 2nd, 2006, 2:28 pm

Hello, PixieWhispers

I'd just like to add that there's only me and my hubby at home now and I have not moved everything out of my kitchen, either. Joe is a big snacker...hourly in the evening...and he isn't overweight! So, when I have trouble with temptation, I make him eat his snack in another part of the house. He does it without complaint and returns to be with me after he is done eating.

I find it helpful, too, to remove myself from those places where I have eaten ( other than the kitchen ), i.e., the recliner in the front room while watching TV. If I am really honest with myself, there's usually a reason why I am feeling tempted: not drinking water, missing a shake or two. I had to make myself clean a room today in order to get my mind off of myself and my food thoughts. It worked!

As time goes on I look forward to developing new coping mechanisms other than food. It takes practice for me to think with my head and not my stomach or feelings.

Congratulations for noticing that you needed some support! Don't ya just love this forum!

Hi!! I have a husband and 3 sons, age 5, 4, and 8 months. I also have your same problem. My husband and I would go to lunch together quite often because it seems that is the only time we can have a real conversation. And yes, the "junk" is a huge problem. My family loves to eat. And, I love to cook. People ask me what I am doing about that, and they always laugh at my response. I just pretend like everything gives me diarhea. Seriously. I just remember how bad the cramps hurt and the sudden trips to the BR and how embarassing it would be to have an accident, and it works for me. I just tell myself "you don't know how that chicken fried steak is going to react with all of this soy you have been consuming. What if you get diarhea? Really bad??"

Avoiding foodie things

Postby Jan » May 2nd, 2006, 3:18 pm

Hi there,
I have a tall skinny husband who has to eat to maintain his weight. He loves peanut butter on hot toast. Gerrrr It smells sooo delicious. But, I just tell myself that we are different. Some can eat everything, others can't. But I will also share with you that his hair fell out and I have a full head!!! I would much rather have my hair than eat peanut butter toast!!!

Hi!

I have a skinny hubby and 3 kids. Two girls 6 & 7 and a son that is 11 months. I have to keep "junk" type food around the house for them. After the first week on MF I no longer craved junk food and did not find it hard to resist. I stayed away from buying easter candy that I know I love and try to have a cruncy snack when I know the family will be having there snack. I like the oatmeal granola snacks I make in the oven. When I have to cook for the rest of the family I just try not to think about it. I am doing well with my weight loss and that is always on my mind. So I dont cheat as I dont want to start over.

Good luck with your weight loss journey.

Here too,

Postby Ginabobina1969 » May 2nd, 2006, 4:37 pm

I have a 10 year old a 9 year old and of course the big kid(hubby) lol

I never removed anything from the house and continue to pack lunches with all kinds of yummy things, buy donuts, cakes and all sorts of baddd stuff for the fam when they request it or sometimes even not. I just won't eat it and they dare NOT touch any of my medimeals(I am like a lioness protecting her cubs when it comes to my medimeals)

I have noticed tho that I am fixing healthier meals in general and instead of buying lots of bags of chips I buy lots of bags of premixed salad and the kids are snacking much healthier(most of the time)

You have power over what crosses your lips. Keep SF gum and Mints and jello handy..has saved me from crossing over to the "dark side" more often then not. lol

You can do this!! You have way more willpower then you realize and were going to help you realize it! :D

Hugs,
Gina

I also have a husband and a 10 year old son to cook for. It was tough the 2nd day, but after the 3rd day not really a problem anymore. The cravings and hunger really do go away. :)

I used to buy a treat once a week when I went grocery shopping for everyone, like a box of cookies or something from the bakery, but not anymore. I am keeping junk food out of the house now as much as I can, but they still need their bags of chips and snacks for their lunches. It's alright, I can deal! No problem with it.

I don't have any kids, and my hubby is very supportive. We got rid of all the junk that he wasn't going to eat, and now if he wants something, I make him eat it when I'm not around. If he buys a bag of cookies, then I make him hide it somewhere not in the kitchen and somewhere I won't normally look. I don't even know it's in the house. Kinda silly, but it works for me.

I have an 11yr old daughter and 7yr old son that eat like mad and are thin. My daughter is actually rooting for me. My daughter about had a heart attack when she saw me eating the MF crackers and chicken salad yesterday. The chicken salad was in a bowl and she thought I was off plan.

It's a little tougher when they are eating baked potatoes for dinner and honey buns for snacks......but think of it as power. What a great feeling when you say no thank you to it.

I have 4 teenagers and a hubby and they all love to snack. I just had to come to the realization that this is my problem and not theirs and I would just have to suck it up. I really think that this has actually made me stronger although it is not always easy and they know not to sit right by me and eat.

One day my 14 yr old had leftover nachos and thought she would be cute and sit right next to me and eat them while saying "yum, these are sooooo good" I did not say a word, just took the container of nachos and went and dumped them out in the trash....needless to say none of the kids have tried anything like that since.

I have not started yet, but I know that challenge for me will be to avoid food at home. I am married to a man with the tall & skinny gene- so he can eat what he wants and not gain. I will have to avoid watching him eat late- night pizzas and cookies :(

New to MF with kids and skinny hubby

Postby Lambchop » May 3rd, 2006, 9:04 am

Hi everyone, I'm a newbie and this is exactly the topic I've been most concerned about so I thank you all for your comments!

I have two slim teenage daughters (14 and 15) and a skinny husband, and I have always enjoyed cooking for my family. So I think one of my biggest challenges on Medifast will be shopping for food, planning meals, and of course the cooking.

What I plan to do, though it won't remove all temptation, is to get my daughters involved in meal planning and preparation. I've told them they need to learn to decide what they are going to eat, and how to prepare their own meals, before they go away to college... and there's no time like the present to start learning! I'll still go food shopping, but with a grocery list made up by them. And I'll still be surrounded by food while I help them prepare their dinners, but hopefully I can be strong enough to resist nibbling while we are all in the kitchen together. I think they will enjoy this new routine, at least for a while.

Anyway, I'm so glad to be here and I'm looking forward to participating. I just started Medifast yesterday and feel great about it.

Best wishes,
Kay

Lambchop, what a great idea! I think that is an excellent plan, and so beneficial to your daughters as well.

Personally, I have it easy. I travel five days a week so I pack my meals before I leave. The hard part for me is A) all the food brought in for us (but I just think of all the calories and I'm okay) B) The cute bartender next to my corporate apartment (where I get my lean and green) He always has my salad ready for me in the evenings.. . but I am constantly telling him NOT to give me a martini anymore!

It was easier saying "NO" to everything when I was on the complete plan. Unfortuantly, my body did not react well to it.
