I may have made a boo boo!

Postby Lulie » April 25th, 2006, 9:34 pm

Ok,

Here is what happened. I made taco's for dinner tonight and had read the package for the seasoning and thought it sounded safe. Afterwards, I got to looking at the package and realized the amounts for everything were wrong because they were basing the amounts listed on it on a 1 serving size instead of the 6 serving size that was actually in the package!

Please help me figure this out. I used 2 packages of seasoning for 2lbs of lean burger. I ate my 5oz portion. Here is what it actually works out to be for 1 package and 6 servings:

120 calories per pack
0 fat, protein
19g carbs
6g sugars

Do you think this really blew it? Is there a taco seasoning that is acceptable? I am using wal-mart brand. I was so hoping to have this salad again tomorrow as it was so tasty tonight. Really hit the spot, which is amazing since all I had was lettuce, tomatoes and meat. And a little taco sauce. Usually I loaded my taco salad with the works and extra chips. I was surprised this was so good. Now I am worried it may not be a good choice after all.

I would appreciate any help.

So you used two packs for about 6 servings? That's a fair amount of extra calories (40 per serving) and carbs (more than 6 grams per serving). I wouldn't have it again.

But don't beat yourself up. We all make mistakes, especially in the beginning.

Did you use it all up, or do you have more for later meals? If you have more, maybe you could add more meat and have it for that many more meals.

This seasoning will not work with the plan, unfortunately. I wouldn't eat anymore of it, although, I'm certain it's VERY yummy. If you had 5 oz out of the 2 lb mixture, I'd be willing to bet that you had almost 1/2 of a pkg in your portion. If this is the case, then you added about 7-9 carbs to your day ... OUCH!!

Hi Lulie!
The next time you make tacos, you might want to try my recipe - it's just herbs & spices and makes a terrific taco :) I make a bunch of it up in advance, store it in a jar and use it as needed :)

1tbls chili powder
1/2tsp garlic powder
1/4tsp onion powder
1/4tsp crushed red pepper flake
1/2tsp paprika
2tsp ground cumin
1tsp salt (I use kosher, but you can also use regular table salt or sea salt)
1tsp cayenne (ground red pepper) - or less - this one is to taste!

mix them all together, add to your browned & drained lean beef, chicken, turkey, etc & simmer with a bit of water for about 10 minutes.

it's delish & remember, you can adjust the amt of red pepper flakes & ground red pepper you use to suit you & your family!

I throw in the same spices. Thanks for the recipe. I think I'll create a taco spice jar too!

I forgot to mention that I also add a bunch of fresh stuff when I use that recipe - fresh garlic, a touch of onion, fresh cilantro, etc - use your imagination & add whatever catches your fancy or sounds good with your dish! Fresh ginger is also great when grated into it :)

lol i've not tried the ginger in Tacos yet Julie, but I use the seasoning mix for a bunch of different things, not just tacos - it's good for bunches of stuff.
But, I have to admit, I'm a fresh ginger & garlic JUNKIE so I'll add them to just about anything lol

Thanks so much for the support. And thanks Shana for the recipe. I used to use my own spices for taco's but just gave in to the packs since they are easier and seemed to taste better. I won't make that mistake again though.

Your recipe sounds good, so I will definitely be trying that one out!

Thanks again.

OMG my mouth is on FIRE holy cow that was good but sooooo spicy but it made me drink my water. I put in ground turkey and there is no way I am going to be able to eat all 7 oz of this that I put on 2 cups of shredded lettuce with tomatoes and onions.

Good recipe girl way to make me drink that water hehe
