Math Question

Postby RavenKat » September 25th, 2004, 8:32 am

Hi all,

I was going through some old paperwork and found a medical form from 1992. I went in to get a metabolism test - they put a plastic bag like device over your head and measure the calories you burn. That info didn't help me much. I weighed 215.3 then and stayed that weight for many years to finally increase to 250 by last November.

The question I have is this: My weight is listed as 215.3 and as "148% of expected". Can anyone tell me what they think my "expected weight" should be? My crude math skills come up with 145.

Thanks in advance!

Kat - I read this different; 215 pounds according to this “plastic bag device” is +148% of your target. I see this, as what ever your target is, is 100%. You are currently at 215, which is 48% over the target, this test is suggesting. If you subtract 48% from 215, you get 103. 215-103=112. I could be wrong. You said, as did smartiegrrl that you came up with 145, and her at 145-1/2. Out of curiosity, how did you do your math? Mine could be easily wrong, but this is how I read it.

My calculation is WAY different than yours, and I actually hope I am wrong…

Interesting…

I'm embarrassed to show you my math. :D Never was my strong suit.

I figured there was something like this: 215 = 1.48 * X
then, I divided both sides by 1.48: 215/1.48 = X
and finally, 215 / 1.48 = 145.2

Another way I did it was to divide 215 by 148 (=1.4527027) then I multiplied it by 100 (=145.27).

The part that amazes me that I'm 5'11" and my expected weight is 145?! Yikes! I'm aiming for 165.....

I also divided 215/1.48 to get 145.2. The idea here is the machine says her current weight is 148% of expected. I assume this is set up this way because there are people who will be at less than 100% of their body weight. So the idea was to find what that 100% is. In reality she was 48% over the expected. From 145 to 215 is a 48% increase.

Kat - I don't know if I would go 100% (hehe more percents) by what one machine says. It could be prone to some error. If it was still available to you, I'd take the test several times and then take the average. I suppose once you are at 165 you can decide if thats where you want to be or not as well. You have so many options! :D

Smartie Girl,

You are correct! And the algebra equation you used is correct as well.

So the answer is 145

How tall are you?

"Algebra".....That is such a flash from the past! Pretty soon I'll be calculating the slope of something!

Elly, don't know if you meant to ask me my height instead of smartiegrrl - I'm 5'11".

I'm 5'11".

Dang KAT!! 5'-11" WOWOW this is so cool... Glad I know this, and that my calculations were WRONG (yes he is wrong sometimes) cause at my result, you would be uh, just a little small? 145-165 for someone of your towering height sounds just great....

Oh and I wanted to add I am so jealous of your height. I'm 5'4" and what I wouldn't give to be at least 2 inches taller. :D

That's funny - I've always wanted to spend a day as a littler person. Not just weightwise. I can't imagine looking up at people or being literally picked up by someone. The closest I ever came was once hanging out with three guys that were all over six feet tall. One was 6'7". We were standing in a circle talking and I felt like a tiny little thang!

HUSHHHHHH Katz!!

on behalf of the Female Shrimp Nation...that's all of us 5'5" and under....I can tell you it would be nice to be a couple of inches taller. I'm 5'5"

Smartie Girl ...I was just asking your height because I was wondering about the target goal of 145?? So I was under the impression that you were slighty taller...but since I don't know what they based it on ..then never mind.

lololol… many, many moons ago, I dated a girl that was a member of the shrimp nationals. Being tall myself (6’3” – and loving it) I remember, I could stand next to her, and literally rest my arm on top of her head, like an arm chair. When rested, my arm was completely horizontal, she was that short. It was all in fun. Don’t know what prompted me to remember this trivial trivia…
