WOW Lizabette - 20# ankle weights - you go girl!! I am so happy that your hubby is doing so well. I hope you had a great time with all the company you have had this week. And hope your boat got a workout. We had that heat today and tomorrow is supposed to be even hotter. Try to stay cool.

Itsy ~

Are you walking about with 20# ankle wraps (yikes! That’s two bags of flour ya got strapped on each ankle, Girl!) or are you lifting 20 # with each leg?

I often walk with 5# ankle wraps on my ankles or carry 5# weights in each hand but no way would I wanna walk my 4+ miles per day with 20# strapped to each ankle! Guess that’s sortta what I used to do before I lost all that flabber, eh?

We were meant for motion so I am thankful that you are enjoying that aspect of your life – it is rewarding for me to see how many of us enjoy exercise now. It is a needful part of weight management and it has great benefits in terms of stress reduction, relaxation it increases our energy level and mental clarity. Sweatin’ is healthy!

Oh, LW, NO, I don't walk about with 20# ankle wraps! In my last post I explained, I thought, that I have the 10# each ankle weights (20# total) for my resistant training exercises.
Actually we are not supposed to walk with them on, 'cause we could lose our balance, etc.
I am up to about 6# for each leg and will try to work up to 10# for the lifting exercises, but not for walking.
I'm rushing this morning, but will be back later to 'splain better about it!
Thanks, my Leopard Woman friend.
And SUZY, girl, I'll talk to you later too. when I do my reg'ler journal,

I don't want to butt in here, but ... walking with ankle weights is generally not a good idea, ESPECIALLY if you have joint problems. From about.com (but repeated many, many other places):

Wearing weights can increase the calories burned while walking, but it is far safer to just walk further instead. Weights at the ankles, feet, wrists and hands increase the risk of injury to the knees, shoulders, muscles, tendons and repetitive motion injury. A weighted backpack can cause strain if the weight is not distributed across the hips. Only a weighted vest or hip belt is recommended. I do not recommend weighted shoes, all of my experts caution against them.

Right, ROBIN, and it bears repeating! Thanks.
What weights are you using for your weight sessions? And how often?
I take it slower and more moderately, I'm sure...and there are standards according to age, etc.
I've wondered about the weighted vest.

I usually lift three times a week (alternating upper and lower body), plus do abs a few times a week separately. Weight depends on what I'm doing. Upper-body stuff is usually still only 10 pounds each arm, although I'm about to bump it up a little on bicep curls (not shoulders, though, and it depends what I'm doing with triceps; and I think chest stuff might have been heavier). With legs, it's more. Leg press the other day was 150 pounds, but it wasn't enough so I'll bump it up this week. Walking lunges are with 20 pounds (but all the way across the gym and back, which is maybe 50 of them?). Hamstring curls are usually 15 pounds each leg (more weight if I do fewer reps). And I'm not sure what the weight is on the butt stuff (I use a donkey-kick type machine plus up and down on a step while holding weights - I think 20 pounds but I'm not sure).

I usually just increase the weight till it's hard to get through a set of 12. And then do three sets. If I can finish all three, then next time I increase the weight. And if my muscles are jelly and hard to control when I'm done, I did a good job. :)

Thank you SUZY. We did have a great weekend with family and friends.
Played games but no boating.
Of course those 20# ankle weights are a total of 10# each. I think that is about all that I am supposed to do at my age. (Maybe a little more.)
WOW, look at ROBIN's post. I don't think I will or can match her on the weights.
I am reading more and more that weight training is secret to the 'fountain of youth'.
If that be true, then let me at 'em! :weightlift:

ROBIN, you are phenomenal! You are getting younger by the day!
Thanks for sharing your regimen with all of us who are interested.
Our SW instructer really pushes us to increase our weights when they get too easy.
She'd like for us to be jellified when we're done! :aarggh:

That is so true, NANCY. I never woulda thunk it, before. I think I would be struggling much harder on maintenance without the extra push of exercise.
WOW on you for 4 miles walking a day. I don't do it every day, but usually at least two miles.
You and ROBIN, LAUREN and I know there are others are such inspirations on the exercise front.
Take it easy on walking with weights...it is not recommended because of the risk on bones and balance.
Amazing, isn't it, that we did walk with all that flabber before Medifast?
Thank you again, my LW friend.

JULY 9, 2007 - 131.7# :-P

ZOWIE, We're having a gulleywasher outside, so no Y today, but not to worry ...
I've already done a 2-mile inhome walking tape.
I'm hoping that when it lets up, that DH can still get his walk in on our street.
This is a wonderful day to just stay in, read, post or whatever turns me on.
So I'll check back in later to see what is going on out there in Medifastland.
I hope that whatever the weather or situation, everyone is happy and becoming healthier today.

Hi Lizabette - we had bad storms around my area this afternoon. Just got back from a 40 minute walk and the electric company is out cutting down trees and trying to restore power to many areas. Loads of big trees are down and on houses - not a nice sight. Hope you had a great day!!

YAY SUZY, on the 40 minute walk. That should be close to a 4 mile walk and burns calories of a full meal.
Hope you don't lose your 'lectricity. Keep the candles handy!
We're still getting some rain today.
It cleared enough to walk the babies about a 1/2 mile or so.
Sure cooled the temperature down.
Proud of how you are progressing, SUZY. I'm a'watching!

Thanks so much Lizabette. Day 2 of the challenge is going well. It's still hot today and are supposed to get more storms this afternoon. But all is well. Tomorrow the temps are supposed to be cooler. Thanks for watching out for me - I need all the help I can get. Thanks again!!

SUZY, You're doing so great. Congrats on the 50#. I wasn't watching close enough when you reached it.
I remember that was probably the greatest milestone of my journey!
Your pictures in STUDIO are fantastic and WOW, I can imagine how they are going to be when you reach goal. You are already so gorgeous!
YIKES!

JULY 10, 2007 - 133.8# - :?

Been raining cats and dogs most of the day....
Did 2-mile walking tape, and an hour of Strong Women weight resistance, stretching.

Hey, I'm considering moving my journal over to the Maintenance Forum.
I've neglected posting there and that's probably the best place for me at this point.
The Journal Forum has lots of traffic and not many parking spaces.
That doesn't mean I won't be driving by and checking out the sojourners there. :drive:
So many good things going on here I wouldn't want to miss!

Have you checked out the 2007 Medifast Stars yet? Wow, what inspiration!
It's enough to motivate the weariest weight loss traveler.
I entered the contest, and although I didn't win, I am still a winner!

In fact, we are all winners, as we continue our journey on to health and fitness.
