lemon juice and pickles

Postby KellyC » April 30th, 2007, 5:04 pm

I had mergez (a sort of spicy middle eastern sausage) the other day.. usually I like it with pita bread and ketchup and pickle, but instead I used a couple of lettuce leaves and made a sort of hot dog bun with it.. and wanted to add chopped pickles, but I had already had 2 pickles as a snack.. :(

I am curious, why we are limited to 2 pickles for a snack.. my pickle jar says 0 calories, 0 fat, 0 carbs..

Also, is lemon juice ok? I don't use alot, but sometimes half a lemon's worth of juice in marinades..

Can someone give me a range in which I should be aiming to keep my carbs per day?

Last.. sometimes when I'm feeling especially hungry, I have a MF soup, and add double the water and a bit of instant bouillion (also zero carb, fat, calorie) is this ok?

Thanks :)

I can answer part of your question! I think pickles are limited because of the sodium. Excess sodium will cause us to retain water and besides, it's just not good for us. :) I think Medifast recommends less than 2300mg a day of sodium. Oh btw, pickles do have calories. My pickle jar says 5 calories each if I remember right.

Carbs should be within the 80-85g (TOTAL carbs, not net) range for optimum weight loss, but a max of up to 100g is acceptable if your body lets you. I guess people vary so some people are more sensitive and cannot go that high without dropping out of ketosis.

I was going to say something, but Tonia said it.

Hehe  beat ya to it LOL!

I was actually hoping you could answer about the lemon juice as well Mike, that would be nice to have some in water or tea. I thought we could have some but only a little but I don't remember accurately so I can't say.

Okay... looked it up.
Lemon juice, bottled or canned: 1 Tbsp = 3 calories, 3 mg sodium, 1 g carb, 0 everything else (or so minimal they don't list it - takes a cup of it to get 1 g protein). ;)

I usually goto www dot nutritiondata dot com for my info. They have an easy click down menu for different serving sizes.

Yeah I figured there were carbs in it. :( Well who really needs more than 1TBS a day anyway?

You know the USDA has a nutrition facts database, that's where fitday and nutritiondata get their info from I bet!

I've tried the USDA site and it just takes more steps to get what I want. The nutritiondata site has the info compiled already with easy pulldown menu.

Thanks for your replies.

I take it easy on lemon juice anyways, but sometimes I like to use a little bit with a drop of olive oil and chives to make a lovely fresh tomato salad... and like I said before, I like to use it in marinades.

I'll just start keeping track of carbs, and if I find I'm going over the recommend, I'll stop with the lemon juice.
