Knee Surgery on Monday - 4/24

Postby FORMOMMY » April 21st, 2006, 10:41 am

So I am having surgery on my knee (torn MCL and ACL). I cannot eat after midnight - the surgery is for noon so I won't be out of recovery much before 3:00p according to the nurse. I am not sure how to handle this as far as eating and stuff.

Do you think that day will screw things up if I don't get all my supplements in? I know that on Tuesday I will go right back to my schedule but I will also be on medication too. So I guess I am thinking that I better prepare myself for a less than stellar weigh in on next Sunday.

Any thoughts/advice?
Michelle

No. In a time like this, you do what your doctor says, get the knee fixed and then get back on track. Remember that protein helps the body heal after trauma, so be sure and get Plenty of protein in you diet in the days after your surgery. Good Luck!!

I second following your doctor's advice and guidance. You may need some extra calories for the trauma on your body/system and for healing. We all know how much you want to succeed and stick to it, but you should do what your doctor tells you and what's best for your health!

My prayers will be with you (and the doctor) for your surgery and recuperation!

Michelle ... Chat with your MD and remind him about your diet. I was in a pretty bad car accident a few years back and had a severe case of whiplash for weeks. The doc made me eat real food in addition to the shakes b/c of all the pain meds and muscle relaxers that I was on.

Thanks everyone and I really appreciate the prayers. I'm no stranger to surgery but it is never a pleasant thing to go through. THankfully knee surgery is much less complicated and the recovery time much quicker than years ago. Gotta love modern technology!

I will talk to the doctor and get his advice. I figured that on Monday - at least - I would probably not be compliant. Even though I usually get something for the nausea, I don't do well with anesthesia. So I figure since I won't have eaten since probably around 10:00p the night before, I will want some toast or something when I get home. I was geared up for that. But I was hoping to get right back to it the next day. Guess I'll play it by ear.

The good news is that once I am over this phase, I can go right back to the MF plan and I know that all I will have to endure are the dreaded 3 days! HA!

THanks again for the well wishes and advice.

Hugs

Hugs and Prayers Michelle!! Even with an uncomplicated surgery I know once you have kids it's always a bit of added "scare" factor there.

Prayers that you will breeze through surgery and your healing will be swift and painless.

Hugs,
Gina

Michelle,
I know you're going to come through the surgery & recovery with flying colors! Just follow the doctors advice regarding nutrition- you might need extra protein, etc during the healing phase, and let us know how things are going!

Thanks, Gina, Vicky, Shana, Bobbi and Lizabette for the prayers and comfort. I just sent the girls off to school with Dad and I am going to take a shower and get ready for my big "date" with the doctor!

Yes, being a Mama definitely adds to the stress of going under for surgery but I know that the Lord will have everything work out to His glory. If all goes well, I will be back at home by 3:30 or so just when the girls would be getting home.

Thanks again all for your prayers...Talk to you all soon.
