JLo

Meet Terry and Nancy.

Postby Nancy » May 11th, 2005, 7:45 am

Dear JLo ~

Jaylo is better than Jell-o….you know, I haven’t quite figured this one out yet because I subscribe to the same stinkin’ thinkin’ issue…why is it we obsess and worry and denigrate ourselves for the way we were hand-fashioned?

I look at my buns or hips or eyebrows, or earlobes, or…and think, Oh Man! If only I could…If only I had a __ like ___ (You fill in the blanks here…) and I look so much better than I did before Medifast.

Why do I care so much NOW and seemingly didn’t care when I weighed 265 pounds?

Truth is, I cared very much about it then. I cared a lot about my ample bosom, buns, chins and chunks – just didn’t know how to rectify it.

It got to be too big for me to handle so I failed to look at it, to really look.

I covered it up in voluminous clothing, didn’t really focus my eyes on it when I passed by a window or mirror – avoided my reflection at all costs.

We need to love ourselves – really be thankful for what we have and who we are and what we are becoming: healthy.

I am a chronic complainer. The biggest self-loather around.

You read about my moanings regarding my lousy haircut a month ago. It was very sobering for me to see a woman with no hair – it wasn’t due to a mad hair stylist, she has cancer.

I had a little dark glow about my head area (now semi-gown out) at the time I was grousing about my Mr. Clean look…

We are uniquely us.

There’s not another like us anywhere.

We are here for a purpose - for this time and in this place.

Let’s all think about a few things about ourselves that we love – write it down and think on it all day. Think of a couple physical and a few mental/emotional traits.

I’ll start.

1. I like the way my hair curls at the nape of my neck.
2. I love my lips – kiss kiss
3. I like the way that I make people feel special.
4. I like the way I can get away with wearing quirky things and feel confident doing so.
5. I like my pierced pinky fingernail.
6. My skin is soft and smooth.

Your turn…

You have a pierced pinky fingernail?? I've never heard of/seen that -- what's it look like?

Yup.

Have had it for 17 or 18 years now.

It looks very cool.

A small gold O ring right there in my pinky nail, it dangles when I move my hands.

See, I can do quirky things.

Because I can, I do.

I have seen a lot of piercings.........in some unusual places. I can honestly say, I have never seen a pierced fingernail.

But.........it sounds WAY cool.

As the nail grows, or is trimmed, do you have a new piercing made?

I for one, would LOVE to see a close up pic of this. Think you could have Unca take one and post it for us? Who knows, you may just end up being a trend setter Nancy.......it could catch on quickly.

Dean...PUH-LEEZE no elaborations on the weirdly odd piercing places...

Yes, as the nail grows out, we re-pierce it closer to the finger tip.

It is very fun - many people ask me if it hurts to have it pierced.

:scratchhead: Trend-setter? I doubt that, Darlin'.

Honestly, I have worn it since 1988. Let's see, borrow one, carry it over, subtract, borrow-borrow, carry it over, subtract. 17 years so far...

It's one of those “because I can, therefore I do” things.

My daughter thinks I am odd - "Mom! That skirt is too short!"

I think it looks cute with my brown leopardy print tights...

"Mom, your eyebrows look like Uncle Leo's on Seinfeld - did you draw them on with a Sharpee pen?" (No, I didn't.)

re: the pierced pinky nail...It is interesting to watch people's faces when they catch a glimpse of it. At first they are not sure if they see something there or not.

Men usually ask me about it right away.

Women want to ask about it but they usually don’t – you know how we are…they just listen very closely when men ask me about it.

People will take a  double look when they notice it. Realizing there is really something dangling there - not a burglar...then they grab my hand and say, “is that a little gold ring in your nail?”

“Yup.”

“Oh, my! Does it uh…does it hurt?”

I look them straight in the eye, dead-pan serious face and reply,
"Hurt? Oh, yeah! It hurts just as much as it hurts you when you clip your fingernail or your toenail."
It takes a minute for it to sink in and then they get it...

Oh, we'll see about an up-close and personal fingy picture later in the day. I am on my way to take my 80 year old Momma shopping... :burnout:

Not sure if your encouragement has to do with my post in roll call last night regarding JLo or not... But coensidental just the same. Isn't funny how we make fun of ourselves in order to feel better. Better than making fun of others to feel better I guess. I always use JLo because it works for her and she is beautiful.

Nancy, thanks for the reminder of who we are and that we are all special. I agree and sometimes need the reminder. Loosing wieght is about getting healthier and better. Taking care of this body we have been given to wonder around in for this time and place. Looking better and feeling better about ourselves in the process is the reward.

I love your style and personality! I am an introvert and am sure that when I get to heaven, I am going to be a extrovert. Some of my friends are just like you and they are my favorites, because they bring the freer part of me out.

Ok, no one so far has taken you up on the "what I like about myself" list. So here is mine:
I am loyal and loved
I like the way my hair is starting to be naturally highlighted.
I like the way I can tan easily
I like the shape of my legs.

Ok, whose next?

Blessings all, Bess

(forgive my spelling...wish the forum had spell check, can that be added somehow)

This is a tough one, Nancy. I really had to think about this one. Why is it so hard to compliment ourselves? :dunno:

OK, I guess I will go next, Bess.

Things I like about me:

*I like my eyes. :cateye:
*I like that I have (actually had) an hour-glass figure. (I will soon have it again.)
*I like that people say I look young for my age.
*I like my sense of humor. ( I like my other 5 senses too  )

OK, I want to hear from others.

Nancy,
I used to have a pierced pinkie as well when I had acrylic nails ,and it had numerous things in it depending on my mood, from a gold stud, a heart, a dangling star etc.
It was fun but I always caught it on things  Then I went back to my own nails short but pretty and now can no longer do it. But it was COOL!

I am going to jump in here and give a list of things I love about myself

1. I love my hair, it's thick and shiny
2. I love looking younger than my chronological age
3. I love being able to be silly, goofy and childlike ! It keeps me young :D
4. I love my capacity to love and make those around me feel special.
5. I love my new bod!!! It is pretty darn sexy getting even sexier ;)
BUT most of all I LOVE that I made a decision to get healthy and take better care of myself not only by losing weight and working out, but by taking care of my poor teeth which was a health concern and beating
down and conquering my major fear of the dentist.
I LOVE that I will turn 50 healthy, happy and proud of who I am and how look and feel.
Great post Nancy!

I too have things I like about myself but have never written them down or told anyone.

I like my long silver hair because my husband thinks it is beautiful.
I like my small wrists as I make jewelry for fun and anything fits.

Wow... this is really hard, because before Nancy introduced me to Medifast, I thought I was ugly, that I could never look as good as my younger sister because I felt I needed the food. No matter what diets I tried I always gained it back.

I have kept my weight off for 2years now. So I can say I like the way I look. My husband no longer says to me "You look good no matter what size you are". Now he says with meaning behind his words "Honey, you look Great".
