My Iron Supplement Has 5mg Carbs per Dose

Postby VictoriousNat » September 1st, 2006, 8:07 am

Hi all,

I am emailing Nancy, but thought I'd post here to see if someone has knowledge about this. I am anemic (from heavy periods which are slowly getting better) and iron supplement pills were not working - so my doc had me go on a liquid iron called floradix - it tastes like rusty nails and berries  . Anywho, I looked at the nutrional content last night and noticed it has 5mg Carbs per dose and I am supposed to take 3X per day!!

Sweet mother of pearl!!! Help!!

Have you talked to your doctor about this since you started Medifast? Taking 5 medifast supplements a day gives you more than the RDA for iron; most people do not get this much iron in a day. The doctor may suggest you start taking less of that or switch to something else.

Hey Sayra,

Thanks for replying. The RDA is not enough for an anemic - well THIS anemic; my stores are depleted. He wants me to continue until my hemoglobin goes up. My stores are so depleted iron overload is not on my radar for decades. So I have to keep suplementing - if my hemoglobin goes above 12 on MF then he will let me stop taking the supplement.

[quote="VictoriousNat"] floradix - it tastes like rusty nails and berries  [quote]

I don't have an answer for you Nat, but it sounds like good stuff! ;)

My guess would be may add 2 oz of meat to you L&G to even out your protein/carb ratio??? Just an idea. Other than that, can you ask your doctor is there is an alternative the supplement you're using with no carbs? 15 carbs are 60 extra calories. Not really a big deal. Good luck Nat!

Thanks, Elizabeth. I think my iron will get better. I was not eating meat much before - hardly ever. And then my doc said I MUST eat meat. My hematoligist felt that not eating meat made a fat and anemic. Anyway, I started eating meat slowly and then now have it for my L&G. I think all in all it will improve and balance out! Healthy head of black luxurious hair, here I come!

Well then I wouldn't worry about it as much. Perhaps avoid having a bar while you are on this medication and some of the other higher carbs supplements like minestrone soup.

I am so glad you said that. LOL (I don't like the bars I have and I don't like the minestrone soup - much prefer chicken noodle and cream of broc!)

hehe you crack me up :) But yeah if you don't like the bars or the minestrone soup then definitely don't use them :) They add more carbs to your daily plan than anything else. Second to those things would be oatmeal and pudding, then swiss mocha shakes. Diabetic shakes and fruit drinks are the lowest carb items you can choose from at 10g per supplement. Then iced teas at 12 and 55 shakes at 13 (except swiss mocha). I think chicken noodle soup and possible chicken rice are also 13g carbs.

I have a friend who was horribly anemic but it was due to a huge fibroid in her uterus. She had to have iron shots every week! I'm glad to hear you get to drink some odd medicine instead of get the shots! ugh needles.

Yes, I have one of those unwanted guests too. He needs and eviction notice! He behaved well for years and docs left him alone. Then in 05 he lost his mind and that is what causes my heavy periods. The doc did threaten me with shots. But now they are beginning to not be too heavy. So I may be able to get better on the supplements.

I am looking for some of the fruit drinks. Do they taste good?? I am afraid I might get hooked on crystal light and like need aspartame rehab. I am afraid of artificial sweetners - what me being a refined sugar addict.

I think I will get diabetic RTDs - mine are too sweet.

The diabetic chocolate is slightly less sweet than the 55. It is creamier I think than the 55. I used 8oz of water. I'm going to get some with my next order.

I like the fruit drinks. They're sort of odd but you get used to them. They're not as sweet, but the part that is weird is the creaminess you get from the whey protein that is in them. Some people make them with soda pop or sf syrups. I usually just have them plain with 8oz of water, although the tropical punch and the raspberry iced tea can be nice with crushed ice and sf raspberry syrup.

I assume you are talking aboug GRAMS rather than Milligrams. If it's milligrams, you have absolutely nothing to worry about. If it grams, it's still not something I would be terribly concerned about. I would just avoid eating one of the carb heavy snacks (soy crisps or crackers).
