Hey there, Hula!
The whole sizing thing is wonky because the clothing manufacturers are always renaming the sizes to make the "average" woman a size 12. And, well, the average woman is getting larger.
So, that is why you'll keep seeing women saying "I don't get it, I wore an 8 ten years ago and it was perfect but now it's too big!"
Yep, it's all about the vanity sizing. The dumb "sizes" don't really tell anyone anything since they are always in flux. Of course all us chicas know that even between makers (or in a maker's line!) a size 8 can vary in its actual dimensions.
Geez, why can't we just do inches like the guys!?
When I was in college in 1989, I squeezed into a tight pair of Calvin Kleins. I was probably 150 pounds then. In 2001, I again got into a 10 but in a different brand of jeans, Liz Claiborne I think, but my weight was 165-170! Dang it. I still took the size sticker strip and saved it on my cork board for a long time hehehe! Even if you are aware of it, vanity sizing has power
