High Potassium Level

Postby mellowmom » October 17th, 2006, 7:26 pm

Just got a call from my doctor stating that I had an "emergency reading" in my blood test taken yesterday. He said my potassium level is too high at 5.7. I think he said 5.3 is the highest acceptable number. But, he is questioning the validity of the test results because he said the rest of my blood work wasn't just good...it was excellent. So I've got to go in tomorrow morning to take another test to see what's up.

He asked if I felt weak or washed out and I reminded him that I had seen him back in late June because I was concerned over the fact that I felt really tired and my heart rate was so slow and my BP was kinda low. At that time I had a battery of blood tests taken and they all came back normal except for my HGa1c which was a teensy bit high. So he cut my BP meds in half and told me not to worry about it.

Funny thing is that actually, right now I'm feeling pretty good. My BP is pretty low 97/53 but I don't feel dizzy or lightheaded and can jump up out of bed without feeling woozy. My resting heart rate is between 50-55, but now I'm all worried about this high potassium reading.

Any of you MFers have an issue with HIGH Potassium levels? Just curious.

Your BP is 97/53 and you're still on medication???

But to answer your question, no potassium problems here. My bloodwork last week was perfect. Then again, it was fine before I started, too. Only change is my cholesterol's come down some and my HDL is up a little.

Yeah... I know.. I told the doctor that and he said that the reason I'm on BP meds is as a preventitive against kidney damage caused by diabetes. I've done a little research into it and it looks to me that the reason the kidneys get damaged is because of the high BP...so my question to him was if my BP is low, then how would my kidneys be damaged? But he insisted that BP meds (I take lisinopril) is necessary because of my diabetes.. Just as a side note, my new HGA1c was 5.3 so at least for now, my blood glucose levels are not an issue.

I've got to stop worrying about it...nothing more I can do until I get the results of the re-test tomorrow. Then I'll worry.. :?

Hey Carmel. I had my physical just last week. All my blood works came back looking great. My Dr was so pleased!
I hope you find the cause of you potassium problems!
